Hello everyone.

I have just started on Lantus[ insulin. I am type 11 diabetic. I also take 2 X 1000 mg metphormine every day. My doctor started me on 10 units a day and told me to increase the dose by 2 units every 2 days until my blood sugar was in the range of 80 -120 mg/dcl or 4.5 - 6.8 mmol. I have done this and my blood sugar is normally around 100 mg/dcl.

However I am now taking 96 units of lantus which seems a lot. I split this dose into 3 lots of 32 units taken before breakfast, before lunch and before evening meal. This seems to give me the best control.

My questions are these

is this dose of lantus too high...are there better alternatives?
is it ok to split the dose like this?

Thanks.

I would say there is never too high a dose, only a dose that you need to keep your blood sugars steady, however too much of anything is bad and no doubt there is a quantified number of insulin units that has been shown to be bad.....but your dose isn't in those regions...

Splitting it like that isn't wrong, but I wouldn't of expected you to split it without your consultant/nurse knowing. Do they know...?

Hi Terry, Lantus is a long acting insulin and is designed to be taken once a day either in the morning or in the evening. It is not meant to be split unless specifically advised by your medical team.

It's also sposed to have a flat profile and that isn't true either Phil.

Many people split Lantus into two jabs. usually night and morning. But frankly, you do whatever it is that works for you! Terry's BGs look pretty damn good to me! It may well be that the mini-peaks of the Lantus match the times when his BG would be spiking and it irons them out.

Or whatever.
