Health officials have agreed a ?landmark? five-year plan for the NHS with a new funding formula which they say is fairer and will give more help to areas with older populations and pockets of deprivation.

The board of NHS England yesterday agreed to change the way ?100 billion a year is allocated across the country.

Officials said the system would be fairer and would use a "laser-like" approach to target areas which need it most instead of a blunt tool.

But the plans are likely to be divisive, as they will mean higher increases in many parts of the south, compared with the north, which has fared better under previous formulas.
