Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate in the Sultanate, with the latest WHO global health survey showing that its prevalence has risen to 12.3 per cent of the adult Omani population.
?The total number of diabetes patients registered at the Ministry of Health institutes and who are on regular follow-up was 66,702 by the end of 2010. This reveals that the registered number of patients may represent only about half the actual number of Omanis affected by diabetes,? Dr Sulaiman Al-Shereqi, in-charge of the National Non-Communicable Diseases and Screening Programme, Ministry of Health, said at a press conference on Saturday to announce the second edition of the Beat Diabetes campaign in Oman.
