Morning All,

I have been isolating at home since Tuesday due to being type 1. On Wednesday of last week I woke up to quite a dull ability to taste food and smell, at first I did not realise it was happening until in the evening as I thought it was just a bit strange. In the evening my partner put lavender on my pillow to help me sleep as I had been feeling quite exhausted and worn out. I could not smell anything. I placed tiredness this on the ongoing news and how it was having an influence on my own well being. The news, life and the general upheaval of working from home to do my job put this symptom on the back burner and I ignored my body and did not really think much of it.

On Saturday I saw a news report on lack of smell/taste and how this was linked to people who were asymptomatic. This viewpoint started from an ears, nose and throat specialist who had been working in Italy right through to a plethora of people online advising the same. Within 12 hours there was a lot of people on social media explaining the same symptoms. Looking back I have been abnormally exhausted, waking up at 8am which is late for me and feeling really tired and with headaches in the morning too. Yesterday I had leg cramps and today I feel a little better but my body does feel a little weak and I still cannot taste or smell. My blood sugars are fine but were slightly raised in the first couple of days - I put this down to stress/change of routine which may be still the case. I have tried smelling flowers, more lavender, sliced ginger, a baked cake for my partner and Vicks - not a whiff !! I am working today and feel capable to continue to work.

I have been advised by 111 to stay at home but I have not been asked to follow self-isolating guidelines as at the moment lack of smell/taste is not a symptom that is being recognised. I am calling my GP today to see if there is anything else, it's doubtful but I needed to speak due to following protocol at work. I will self isolate regardless.

I am aware that another post and another load of opinions may put fuel to an already highly burning news/opinion fire however I feel this is worth sharing. Most news networks are reporting this away from PHE and there are a range of opinion makers on the subject including some people who have been diagnosed with Corona Virus and have lost their smell and taste.

I wanted to share this so people were aware but in the interest of supporting fellow forum members too.

Hi and welcome to the forum @tombrum . Interesting thread. Its good you are going for a consultation with the GP (albeit over the phone, possibly) Any loss of senses should be reported in their own right. Hope you get some answers and further investigations. Good luck with it. Stay well.

For me I had to read through the article, when I saw the headline at the week- end. It should have been prefixed as new loss of smell or taste, as they being saying with cough.
As I already live with loss of sense of smell and have done for a number of years.

Sure, it's a very strange feeling. I spoke to my GP today who advised they are getting similar reports coming in however they cannot offer advice and guidance against the current guidelines which makes sense in some respects but not in others - I am self isolating now which she advised to do.

If what me and my family had was the virus then it's a strange one and horrendous, the cough especially. Made my throat bleed probably because of my liver though. (Can't you tell I'm a hypochondriac?) :D You get all kinds of strange symptoms. Once I nodded off in the recliner and woke with a pain under my arm it was so bad I called the doctors in a panic. It went away in the afternoon but I was beside myself. I told my sister and she said she had the same thing. Horrible.

Also you can wake up one day and feel all better and think you're back to normal. Next day cough is back and you're bad again. If that thing we had wasn't Corona goodness knows what it was, as I keep saying. I hope you can't get it again. I knew I was bad when I didn't want to eat.

Of all people, Gary Linekar is now describing similar symptoms. Yesterday I had a few aches and pains, apparently it's the white blood cells fighting a viral infection and very common in influenza viruses.
