Labour MP and guest columnist Andy Burnham says that the recent by-elections proved that labour are on the right track for the General Election.

As the dust settles on the party conference season, one thing is clear – the NHS will be on the ballot paper at next year’s general election.

This last month has flushed out the positions of the main parties. And Labour has emerged with by far the strongest plan to secure its future.

We got a taste of the fight ahead in Thursday’s Heywood and Middleton by-election. Labour’s newest MP made the NHS the focus of her campaign and voters overwhelmingly rejected the two government parties presiding over its demise.

At the Conservative conference the Tories made their own choice clear. They have prioritised tax cuts for some over the NHS. If they are re-elected, there’ll be no extra money for it beyond a frozen budget.
