Labour has been accused of attempting to stop details emerging of a hospital scandal involving higher-than-normal death rates, emails have revealed.

The party is alleged to have put pressure on Department of Health (DoH) officials not to brief the press on an inspectors? report in November 2009, internal emails from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) show.

Appalling standards of hygiene were uncovered at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The report detailed major concerns about unusually high death rate among patients, with inspectors finding blood stains on floors and curtains and badly soiled mattresses.
