Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
Hi firstly to anyone reading this and remembers my previous posts, thanks for your advice and support, I kept pushing to get tested and found out that I am type 1 L.A.D.A.
I am kinda a biology nerd and like to know all the details of my results and tests. So I asked for the details and took a note of them.
I can't make head or tails of the information despite my best efforts of research.
Wondering if anyone is able to help explain the tests and results, compared to somebody who isn't diabetic.
Also can the tests be wrongly read, if other issues are happening within the body, for example gallbladder stones.

Thanks in advance

What tests did you have done @Crumblebee ? It’s good you’ve been correctly diagnosed. Too many adults are assumed to be Type 2 when they’re actually Type 1.

What tests are concerning you?

The blood tests results in my borough include the "normal" values alongside them for all tests, in part because not all tests results are standardized.

The HbA1c test, for example, uses standard scales and each lab will align its results to that. So you could be tested anywhere in the world and know the result will be the same. And with my local lab you not only get separate entires listed for IFCC (in mmol/mol) and DCCT (as a percentage), but both have the same several lines underneath stating the normal ranges and giving advice on diagnosing diabetes. Which is quite helpful if you do not understand it.

But a C-peptide test, which you are likely to have had as it is used to determine your own insulin production, is not standardized, So different labs will give results on a different scale. And in addition to that, it needs to be read alongside a concurrent glucose level, because the amount of insulin your body will try to produce will obviously be based on how much it thinks it needs. High glucose and normal insulin output obviously is not normal.

Sadly it comes with no notes with the results here. And as it is an uncommon test, not everyone knows they need to check the glucose level. I was twice told mine was normal, but fortunately the second consulted with someone else for advice on how to treat me, and they knew how to interpret the results in context.

Glad to hear you have an accurate diagnosis now @Crumblebee

Have you been started in insulin yet?

Welcome to the LADA club . I am glad you persevered and now have the correct dx.
Don’t worry no type of diabetes is worse than any other type, it’s just the causes and treatment is different.
Because LADA initially mimics t2 and mostly starts in adulthood and many GPs/nurses have not only not heard of it (yes LADA is rare) also many believe T1 only starts in childhood, their are probably many misdiagnosed as T2 who are really struggling and through no fault of their own , failing to control their diabetes and probably being blamed for it.

Now you have been diagnosed you should get the right treatment for you.

I was put on MDI insulin when I still had the T2 label, tbh I have found it easier to manage my diabetes since going onto insulin esp since I have now got the correct dx .

I have not re read your earlier posts so I don’t know if you are on insulin or if so which types, but if you are not then don’t fear insulin ok, it’s a hormone that we produce ourselves naturally, just not enough if it lol.
I think the current thinking with LADA is, to get us on insulin fairly quickly to try and preserve as many of our beta cells as possible.
