Being asked to knit a woolly bug is not the most conventional of requests.

The reason for these squidgy bugs is just as peculiar ? to help Glasgow school pupils smash a hand hygiene world record.

Now, this is an unusual combination if ever there was one!

The science project needs 980 bugs to help them complete hand hygiene kits for the 44 schools taking part, which will be used to teach the children about how germs spread.

They still need around 600 cuddly microbes to add to their collection and are hopeful people will get behind the project and help them spread the message that hand hygiene is the single most important intervention in preventing illness.
