Been a little achey and shivery in the back over the last couple of days, and really incredibly super tired. Also very thirsty again (just when I thought I was past that LOL). I think it's possibly a very mild kidney infection, going to try and book in at the docs on Thursday if my GP is back.

Just wondered if there's anything I should do in the meantime? Eg diet wise or avoiding anything (I'm taking amitriptyline, dihydrocodeine, simvastatin and aspirin daily)? I cant test my BG as my monitor hasn't arrived yet.

Try to avoid as much salt or salty food as you can, drink plenty of sugar and artificial sweetner free drinks, water works wonders.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Caroline - shall keep drinking plenty.

My glucose monitor arrived today (as well as the usual 10 strips they send out with one they also sent me 50 extra!), I'm going to start testing tomorrow.

Hiya, my sister is a kidney specialist and when I experience pains she advises me to drink LOTS of water!!!. Hope you get sorted soon. emma

Thanks Emma 🙂

Results are back - they found a couple of different types of bacteria and because I'm still having pain (although it could be a symptom of another ovarian cyst or the adhesions from previous surgery), they're assuming it's a kidney infection - so I've got a 3 day course of antibiotics (trim-something or other) and have been told to drink lots of cranberry juice. If that doesn't work I'm to go back next week.

Is there anything else I should be doing (extra testing or anything?).

I've got a 3-4 hour coach journey tomorrow so I'm hoping these aren't pukey antibiotics :D

Hmm. Presumably not.

Thanks for the help guys.

Are they trimethroprim? My hubby is on these - he has to take them every day. He suffers from recurring urinary tract infections if he doesn't take them..

Hope you're feeling better now?

Karina

Thanks Karina - sorry I didnt update.

The medicine made me better, but a few weeks ago I got the pain back, they sent off my wee and there was only a trace of protein and no bugs grew. Pain went, and came back yesterday (along with typical UTI symptoms - burning etc), been back in to the docs today - again, only a tiny trace of protein and no blood, but they've sent it off and put me on cefalexin for 10 days as it's broader spectrum.

I dont have a temperature though, which is odd, just lots of pain in my kidneys and slight burning when I wee, so god knows whether it'll come back as infection or not, or what it is causing the pain if it comes back negative

Has anyone got any suggestions for prevention or pain relief? Or know whether it's ok to take cranberry capsules when you're diabetic? I know I should wait and ask a doc, but it's the weekend now and I've an interview on Monday and I need to shift this asap :(

I'm taking cefalexin and pain relief (dihydrocodeine and paracetamol), along with my regular simvastatin, aspirin, and low dose amitriptyline.

Hi Lisa
you could ask a pharmacist for advice, they will know all the medicine interactions and what is kidney kind (if you know what I mean).

You can register free with BNF.org and it gives all sorts of info specific to drugs (including costs)

Thanks xx

Urine test came back negative again. So clearly the pain and burning when I wee is all in my head. They said there were some epi-something or other cells found, meaning my bladder is shedding it's lining, but nothing infection related or to be concerned about. So what about the chuffing pain? I've felt so crud this week and now they're saying there's nothing wrong :(

Nurse said to see the doc if I've still got concerns, but it was clear they think I'm a massive hypochondriac - I tell you - the last thing I wanted was a kidney infection this week with my interview etc but I'm more disappointed the test was negative than if it'd come out positive - at least then they could treat me for it!

Forgot to ask if I should stop the antibiotics then, I guess I should?

Any other things that can cause back pain, the need to wee all the time and burning too?
