I was in hospital over the weekend with kidney stones,I was just wondering are kidney issues a common issue with diabetics and if so is there anything I can do to prevent having issues or to help maintain the health of my kidneys .

I know drinking water will help but I’m not fully sure how much more I should be drinking as I drink 1-2 litres a day most days ,should I fully cut fizzy drinks all together as I have them like once a week as treat but I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong to have kidney issues as much

thanks In advance for the tips and tricks

I had kidney stones earlier this year. Ouch......... I feel for you.

I was advised that my diabetes had nothing to do with it. It just happens to some of us.
Certainly keeping well hydrated is good for all of us, and can help reduce their incidence.

The fizzy drinks you have just need to be covered by insulin so do not need to be cut out.
Some people use them as a hypo treatment using a small can, but check the carb content.

Don’t be surprised if your levels were a bit bonkers with the pain. Have you started to make corrections. If not talk to your team about this, especially if the pain has continued, which is likely to lead to raised glucose levels.

I put the pain on a scale of 1 to 10 at 15!!!!
I hope that you are feeling a lot better and that the stones have passed.

Ps
Diabetes can impact on the performance of kidneys in other ways. One of our annual checks is for kidney function. This includes the extraction of unused glucose from our blood. You are likely to have been checked at diagnosis. You can ask for these results and what they mean so that you can keep track of this.

I’ve never had kidney stones thankfully, but your kidneys can have a bit of a hard time when you live with diabetes, so it’s good to get them checked regularly as part of your annual review - this should happen automatically from now on.

I think the U&E and microalbumin are the kidney checks.

Hope you get well soon. Kidney stones can be so painful :(
