Relationship to Diabetes

My aunt who is a T2 and has been for 30 odd years (she is in her 80's) has been found with protein in her urine and has to see a specialist. What exactly does this mean? are her kidneys not working properly after years of diabetes?
 
I don't know a lot about kidney function, but I'm sure seeing the specialist is just precautionary. I hope everything is OK.
