Conventional injections of insulin and use of an insulin pump worked equally well at preventing severe hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetics with impaired awareness of hypoglycemia when patients were provided with the same level of education and support, a randomized controlled trial showed.

In the 24-week study of nearly 100 patients, episodes of severe hypoglycemia dropped from nine to one per patient-year (P<0.001), regardless of which strategy was used, Stuart A. Little, MBBS, of Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, reported at the American Diabetes Association meeting.

Importantly, mean HbA1c was unchanged in all groups, he said.
