I am not worried about the treatment but I don't know when it starts or what happens next I have seen a nurse and all she did was give me a magazine about diabetes

Welcome to the forum, Kevin.t.

The good news is that type 2 diabetes is controllable - you need to take responsibility for your diet, exercise and any medication you need to take. Testing blood glucose levels with a home meter can help you to learn how certain foods affect you - and then you can decide whether to adjust portion size of avoid certain foods / save for special occasions etc.

Do you have another appointment with nurse lined up? Which magazine were you given?

Well done for finding this site Kevin. As Copepod says it is worth finding out as much as you can about Diabetes. There is so much info out there but everyone is different. Good luck 🙂

Hi Kevin, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did you come to be diagnosed? As has been mentioned, although it's not great to be diagnosed with it, diabetes is a condition that can be controlled well, and the adjustments you make can lead to you feeling happier and healthier than you may have for some time whilst you remained undiagnosed.

I would recommend having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, which should help to put you in the picture. I'd also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which many of our members have found very helpful.

Have you been given any medication to take, and do you have a follow up appointment with the doctor or nurse? What happens next will depend to some extent on how your surgery normally handles things, and this may vary. Ideally, you will be given a place on a diabetes education course so you can learn how to handle things - if you have not been offered this, please enquire about what is available.

Please ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help out 🙂

Hi Kevin, being diagnosed scared the beejays?@% out of me too. But as said above, read and act on the knowledge and let no-one tell you not to bother meter testing and changing your diet. 🙂 Good fortune (but not cookie).
