/l think lve got ketones, my breath smells bad , though l brushed my teeth

Hi Rosie, unless you're on insulin or have exceptionally high BG's it is unlikely that you would have ketones if you are Type 2. Do you have a blood glucose monitor so that you can check what your BG's are?

agree with Phil T about ketones and hig numbers. If you are worried it is worth a trip to the doctors and the dentists to rule everything else out too. How do you feel generally in yourself?

Unless of course you are on a very low carb diet? Dietary ketones aren't dangerous as long as your BG isn't high, but there again if it is very high, T2s can get what used to be called HONK, which they call something else now but which is actually quite serious.

Rosie please go and see your GP and tell them everything - the sweet smelling urine, you not taking your meds and the bad breath. Let them take it from there.

As Trophywench says T2s can get ketones - do you have any test strips that you can use?

What does your breath actually smell like Rosie? Ketones smell a bit like peardrops. A dry mouth can make your breath smell a bit horrid, but most likely culprit is food trapped between your teeth. It's quite important to distinguish but I agree, go see your Dr.

Incidentally, I may be way wrong but I think we have met in a chat room a couple of years back?

Are you feeling pretty rubbish / ill ? Have you been sick? These two things are usually associated with high levels of ketones.

hi all

l went to dr today, got the rezult from my blood test dr say its a bit high from last time she said 7. something, last time it was 6. some thing, she sade l must keep taking metroformine 1 a day ,yuk, told her about my breath she sade l should go to my dentist ,not very helpfull very dissaponted in her n h s faled again😡

Hi Rosie, what is the brand on your metformin box? If it doesn't include SR in the name, it's the regular stuff and not the slow release.

Do you have your tablet with a meal? That helps the side-effects a bit. When you do take your tablet, try having it with a meal that does not include rice/pasta/potatoes/bread. That also helps a bit.

How long were you taking them before you gave up? It takes a few weeks for the side-effects to settle, so it takes determination to get the most from them.

Your A1C sounds better than I would have expected if you're not taking your medication but it is still too high.

I know from others that Metformin has unpleasant initial side effects but these are temporary. The side effects of not treating your diabetes are permanent and far worse. You might not be ready for at the moment, I get that, but you will need to start coming to terms with your diagnosis eventually if you want to be happy and healthy.

As for your breath, my gut feeling is it's probably not ketones, it is probably thrush. People with uncontrolled diabetes are extremely likely to get fungal infections which can be resolved by getting blood sugar levels back to normal.

Really the Dr should have looked at Rosie's mouth rather than dismissing her and saying she needed a dentist. I hate the way Drs often dismiss patients as being uncompliant without ever explaining things properly. How can patients be expected to have good control if they have no idea why or how?
