Hey there

Hope everyone is well 🙂

I got a bit of a problem and don't understand, can someone help?
My blood sugars are in the 6.6 range but yesterday I had traces of ketones and today it's its darker at 1.5.. what does this mean and what do I do? I'm feeling so tired all the time.

Thanks 🙂

Hi Alice,

Are these urine ketones? If so, they could be an indication that your BG level was high about 8-12 hours before. What time of day are you doing these tests? The other possibility is that they are starvation ketones, which anyone can get if they haven't eaten for a number of hours.

Yeah they're urine ketones. I done it in the morning.. as far as I'm aware my bs has been ok, and I'm eating regularly as usual. It's just really strange! What do I do if it goes any higher? X

We always now use the blood ketone strips as they are more accurate - telling whats happening in the body nowish as a pose to hours ago - have you got any of those?

Nope didn't even know you could test it that way... I'll go to my doctors and get some.. thank you

I Think your meter has to be able to use both- we have a freestyle optium meter- and it takes freestyle optium ketone blood strips and normal strips too

Hi Alice,

Yes, I'd recommend the blood ketone testing too, you can see straight away if a problem is starting, not wait hours till the ketones show up in the urine. You need to get the Optium Xceed meter from your DSN, and then your GP can prescribe the strips.

The urine ketones you've had in the last day or two are low level and I would think are due to "starvation", ie. you haven't eaten anything in the hours you've been asleep. Did you check them because you were feeling unwell or was it just a random check?
