There are procedures to follow to get rid of ketones, but if your unsure it would be unwise to advise you, could you speak to your DSN on the phone about what to do............

In the first instance give yourself a correction dose to get you back down on target, this should get your BG down, but you still need more insulin to process the ketones, that's where your DSN should come in..........

As suggested speak to your DSN ASAP to find out how to reduce the ketones based up correction doses. Do not do any exercise until your BGs are under 13. I had to speak to my DSN about this yesterday and was very pleased that I did. You also need to make sure that you drink plenty of carbohydrate free liquids, including water, to prevent you from becoming dehydrated. If you can't speak to the DSN at your hospital then speak to the diabetic nurse at your GP's surgery.

Hi Aimee, You should phone your nurse or doctor and ask them for some advice. You will need to take some insulin to bring your blood sugars down, but if you don't know how much to take you need to ask your nurse or doctor. Also, drink plenty of water.

As for the eye test, as you are young, you probably wont need the eye drops so you can ask them if they can try without. Then they will take a photo of the back of your eye, by flashing a small green light while you look at the camera. It really is nothing to worry about because no one will touch your eyes, it is just a photo. You should get a letter a few weeks later with the results.

Hope you are feeling better soon x

Oooh Aimee, having ketones can also make you feel sick and/or dizzy. It's not very nice if that happens.

Do you know what caused the high BG in the first place? - did you forget a jab or something? We've all done that occasionally so we wouldn't shout at you if you had, or done something else a bit daft either - it's just that you need to understand 'why' - so you can avoid doing it again.

If there isn't a simple 'User Error' reason then we have to start thinking of other things that might have caused it.

The important thing is to get your BG down in a sensible way for you - not too fast, otherwise you'll just go hypo instead - and not too slow. And keep drinking that water, to flush em out.

Eyes - if you do have to have drops - they can make your eyes very sensitive to the light so if you have a pair of sunglasses, take them with you to the appointment in case you need them afterwards. I have seen myself standing outside the Drs surgery waiting for the bus home and having to ask passers by 'Is this a No 57?' with tears running down my face because I forgot my sunglasses!

How silly must I have looked? :D

Aimee get on the phone to your DSN (like the others have said), you need to get rid of the ketones as quickly as possible.

Hope you're feeling better soon. 🙂

How are you doing now Aimee?
