The incidence of potentially dangerous diabetic ketoacidosis remains high for young patients with type 1 diabetes, but has decreased significantly for those with type 2 disease, a multi-state survey found.

During 2002-2003, the prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis in type 1 diabetes among youth up to 19 years of age was 30.2%, while in 2004-2005 it was 29.1% and 31.1% in 2008-2010 (P for trend = 0.42), according to Dana Dabelea, MD, PhD, of the Colorado School of Public Health in Aurora, and colleagues.

Meanwhile, between the earliest and latest of the three time periods, the frequency of ketoacidosis in young patients with type 2 diabetes fell from 11.7% to 5.7% (P for trend = 0.005), the researchers reported online in Pediatrics.

These findings suggest that there is "a continuing need for increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes and better access to healthcare," but "improved diagnosis in at-risk individuals" for type 2, Dabelea and colleagues observed.
