Please can someone advise on diets and weight loss with being type 2 diabetic. I've read a lot about keto diets being good for diabetes is this true? Is it just about eating healthy or totally cutting down on carbs

It is all about the carbs.
When you are diabetic your blood glucose rises if you eat more carbs than you can cope with - a meter is very useful for assessing how well the last meal suited your needs.
Returning to normal blood glucose levels usually means feeling better, having more energy and a more normal metabolism.
I find it entirely sustainable, even though I need to stay under 40gm of carbs a day to see good numbers.

Hi, after following NHS advice when diagnosed last March (changing to wholemeal bread, pasta rice, etc) got nowhere so bought myself a monitor to test before and after every meal to see what foods I could/couldnt eat. (Keep a food diary). Now been eating Keto for last 2 months and hardly any spikes now. Lost 2 stone in weight that I didnt want to lose, but increased my fats and proteins and my weight has stableised. Due my next Hba1c in couple weeks time so will see.(If I manage to get an appointment!)

There is no such thing as a 'healthy diet' as it needs to be different for each person. We need to keep the carbs down as we cannot metabolise them properly. I wouldn't use the term 'keto' but just keep the carbs down and have enough fats and proteins to keep you feeling full.

I have done well on a low carb diet in the past and reduced my A1c and blood pressure dramatically in the first three months of diagnosis but you have yo keep it up. I got complacent and find my blood glucose and blood pressure results rising again. Having recently started and struggling with a version of the Fast800 diet, Lots of people have had really good results with low carb and the amount of daily carbs seems to vary. That's where testing come in. I spend the first month or two testing after different types of food to see how they affected me. Once I knew the range of food that worked well for me I stuck to it for a while. I stupidly thought I could incorporate some of the bad stuff... starting with the odd crumpet, sourdough bread etc but it soon crept back into being a substantial part of my daily food intake.

I'd probably say start with something that isn't too extreme and something you feel you can maintain long term.

Hi everyone. I've been doing keto diet now. I'm in my 3rd week. First week I lost 6 pound. Second week I gained half. I can't understand why as I have eaten same things. I have also been suffering with chronic stomach pains throughout the day. My husband thinks I'm not drinking enough. My diabetes review was really good. Nurse has said my levels are a lot lower since reducing carbs and walking. I feel like I've lost weight but the scales are telling me different.

Sounds good @Lumpipdip you have just got to find the right balance for me that was low carb 80-100 or so aday full fat greek yog and milk, cheese etc and exercise, nothing crazy as again you want to enjoy it not dread it.

What ever you choose remember it's not a diet as such it's your permanent way of eating so you must be able to enjoy your food otherwise you wont keep it up it shouldn't be a chore. If your looking for Keto recipes have a look at @NotWorriedAtAll thread (Lets eat Keto) it's full of some great food.

You have hit the nail on the head with what you say. A diet often implies a start (yes OK) and an end ( not OK).
Another good book for recipes is the Keto Kitchen.

You're only 40 .... could the weight gain have anything to do with yer 'ormones, luv?

Do you drink enough though?

Lumpipdip - very few people lose weight consistently on a diet. There are sometimes plateaus, sometimes hormonse get in the way for a week or several other reasons.

If you have been having tummy troubles, have your bowels been reacting in their normal ways? Sorry, very personal, but some folks find themselves a bit constipated when starting keto. It usually sorts itself out, but it can also be uncomfortable.

Your husband is right to be concerned that you are drinking enough. Hydration is very important on a day to day basis, and going low carb or keto can sometimes have us passing more water for a while, and that needs to be replaced.

Are you taking any medication for your diabetes?

I am very recently diagnosed T2D and I've already found that the old cliché - "marathon not a sprint" applies, so any régime has to be sustainable and not dreaded, otherwise it will become a self fulfilling prophecy - certainly in my case that's true.

Keeping the carbs as low as possible, experimenting with foods and regular BG testing so you can tune your diet to both your taste and ability to handle carbs is something I'd highly recommend. It is always a work in progress...

Best of luck.

Hello everyone
I have just been away on holiday for 3 weeks. During my time away I've not been watching my diet. I am due more blood tests in 2 weeks time. Will this show in my count or have I time to get it back on track during 2 weeks before I go?

I assume you mean an HbA1C which is an average over a 2-3 month period so it is important to get back into the swing of things asap, the 3 weeks of probably higher levels than you would like will still be in the average, if that makes sense.
If you think of it as weeks 1-12 then the test in week 13 will not include week 1, a test in week 14 will not include weeks 1and 2 but will include weeks 13 and 14 and so on. That is a basic explanation.

Thankyou that is most helpful. I have been worried about it. I have started back today with my healthy eating. Hopefully get back on track now
