I wasn't very hungry this evening so I just had a tin of potato and leek soup and some bread. I was 4.9 mmol/l before and bolused my usual amount for the food about 20 mins before eating. Thought I would test at an hour and a half after eating to see what level I was at, and it was 3.2! Had some jelly babies and tested half an hour later - 3.1! More jelly babies and tested an hour after - 3.4! Blimey! Yet more JBs. Now had some toast and half an hour after I'm 5.4.

I must have picked up the extra potent insulin by mistake! 😱

woah crazy. did you do a 15 minute re-test after the first lot of jelly babies? 😉

I think you should eat exactly the same thing tomorrow but take the insulin just before you eat and see what happens :D

No I forgot so my test after the first hypo was 30 mins after. It's weird as I have now eaten about twice as many carbs as I bolused for! Might try it again tomorrow, although there are some sausages in the fridge calling my name! 🙂

Hope you have got lots of Jelly Babies in😉

It could just be that you had not eaten much that day , ive had this before and then when i think about what ive had to eat it all makes sense :D

I could have done with some of that last night as it took me ages to come down from a 16.8. Took me until about 11 to come down to below 10.

Tom

I had a similar thing, and I don't mean a crate of super strength lager!

Soup, big carton of tomatoe & basil and a roll counted the carbs (properly) and shot up, in less than an hour I was in the 3's.

Does soup carb do something particularly strange?

It's a game🙄

I think the carbs in soup probably get digested very much quicker as they're in liquid form. They may well 'hit' before the insulin gets to work

I had injected quite a bit before eating though, and this doesn't normally happen to me with soup. I think what may have happened is that I still had some active insulin from my lunch bolus as it was less than 5 hours previously. I had a slice of bread and peanut butter before bed and I've still woken up at 4.8 although recently I've been waking in the high 6s. Something going on!

Well - you have your heating on all of a sudden and heat makes insulin absorb quicker........:D

Seriously, soup seems to be a hard one to get right for Alex too. I normally make my own soup and carb count - but it used to send him hypo within half an hour or so - so now I just do a 'guess' of about 8 or 10 carbs - not based on anything at all - and this seems to have solved the problem - I think because it is a liquid as has been mentioned it must have a different profile than a 'normal' carb perhaps....🙂Bev

I often have wifey home made soup and I carb guess for that, if I had been presented with the shop bought packet without any info I wouldn't have counted so many carbs at all.

Now im worried, ive brought a flask of soup for lunch :D

Baxters turkey broth and the cho said 27, do you think they are over cho on the tin or just work very quickly.

think i will give a reduced bolus just in case, dont usually do tinned soup.

I don't normally have a problem with tinned soup Tracey, which is why last night seemed unusual - I usually bolus for what it says on the tin and have no problems. Maybe some extra tests to see how it affects you? Baxters eh? Classy! 🙂

I always go hypo at some point after having soup, even though the 2 hour after reading is usually in the right range or even high. I now only eat soup on a weekend lunchtime if I know I'm not doing much in the afternoon.

Think it was one of them days as Iwas the same low all day even after eating dextro tabs 1.9 on gettin up went to 5.1 then 6.6 at 10.50 and down to 4.3 12.30 8.2 2.30 and gess what 2.6 at 5.00 got that back up and had tea the nice stew i made and rice what next at 7.00 I was 1.7. I am going to put it down to the weather. If its not only me.

Our blood sugar's being diluted by all that nasty rain! 😱

well 11.0 after two hours, but had a very stressful couple of hours so putting it down to that.

Soup was nice though :D

Hi I just thought I would ask if you carb count, because it really helps me to take the right amount of insulin with each meal. When my bs is 4 or 5 before a meal I defintely could not take insulin 20 mins before the meal because it would go too low and also now I don't have many hypo's anymore - yipee! Sheena
