Last Friday night/early hours Sat morning I was in pain in abdominal area with vomiting and frequent urination. I was eating very bad that week with sweet things due to odd cravings - no more of that now I have been diagnosed this Tuesday just gone. I was advised to go to a and e and they did bloods, but I mentioned I was believing I was pre-diabetic so I think they ruled glucose blood glucose test out and checked other stuff. During all symptoms I started drinking still mineral enriched water. Within Sat morning I was OK. Wondering if mineral enriched water could be a better way to bring down potentially high sugar...maybe better to drink this kind of water with a meal to help levels....

Hi Pamela, ketoacidosis is a specific condition that occurs when a person has insufficient insulin circulating in their system to deal with the glucose entering the blood from digested food (and also glucose being trickled out by the liver). It's highly unlikely that someone would suffer from it if they were prediabetic, and most common in newly-diagnosed or badly-controlled people using insulin. As the body can't use glucose for energy in the absence of insulin it turns to burning fat (and muscle fibre, to some extent) and a by-product of this burning fat is something called 'ketones'. Again, in the absence of insulin, which is needed to help process the ketones out of the blood, they build up in the bloodstream turning it increasingly acidic - when it reaches a certain level is is known as ketoacidosis.

It may be that your confessed 'bad eating' may have pushed up your blood sugar levels, and high blood sugar levels can make you feel very sick. It's possible also that you had symptoms of food poisoning and a reaction, or that you had an infection. Keeping well-hydrated can help, I doubt if the type of water would make any difference, apart from the fact you may feel better drinking it than drinking ordinary water.

Hope things become more settled for you now 🙂

Needs to talk to GP too, I've had a similar 'food binge' and a few weeks before and not felt like that. Don't think it was infection as temperature and bloods were done at a and e. Need to get my liver function checked though as don't have a gallbladder :( will ring doc tomoz but should have before really...

Hope you can get to the bottom of it Pamela 🙂
