Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi Guys,

Im 27 and newly diagnosed type 1 as of 10th of July so just over a month so far.

I found out by speaking to my mum whos husband has diabetes and then going the doctors suffering for weeks of restless nights 6-10 times a night waking with dry mouth, id take a drink then hour later awake again I thought the excessive urination was due to drinking to get rid of dry mouth. Once id done a urine sample the doctor asked to test my blood and it just said HI on the monitor.

2 days in hospital later I was released on 2 a day injections and now moved onto basal bolus due to my life style.

And here I am now just adjusting and taking one day at a time learning more everyday.

Marc

Welcome to the forum Marc 🙂. Sorry to hear about your type 1 diagnosis, but it sounds like you're getting good care from your clinic team. I would highly recommend you get yourself a copy of "Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People" by Ragnar Hanas - which is an excellent book covering all aspects of type 1 in an approachable style (suitable for all ages! 😉).

Good luck with learning new skills Mark. Let us know how you are getting on etc.

Hi Marc, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it can be a shock and such a lot to get used to very quickly. It does become easier, although it will be challenging at times and you will continue to learn something new about your body, how it works, and what you need to do to keep things on an even keel, every day (I'm still learning after 6 years!)

Sounds like you have received good care. I'm glad to hear that you have been moved from 2 injections to basal/bolus - if you hadn't that would have been the first thing I would have suggested. It is far more flexible than two injections as you may have already discovered! Which insulins are you on?

As Redkite suggests, do please get a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, it really is excellent, both as a reference but also as a book to browse and get some prior knowledge of situations you may not have encountered yet - forewarned is forearmed! 🙂

Please ask any questions you may have, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here, so the chances are whatever your question someone will be able to answer it. 🙂

Hi Marc
Sorry to hear you've joined our club, but it's not so bad when you get used to it (promise). I started on two injections too and moved over to basal bolus and it's so much easier despite all the extra jabbing. This forum is great, lots of brilliant and knowledgable people 🙂

Hi Marc and welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear you have had to join the diabetes gang. It feels like information overload to start with but gradually things start to become more normal. Basal bolus gives you a lot more flexibility to fit around a busy life style.

Keep taking it one day at a time. There is lot of friendly support and experience on here. Good luck.

Hi Marc,

Welcome to the Diabetes Club. Not the coolest club in town, but it's pretty sweet 😎

Basal/Bolus is a nice flexible regime. And it can be tailored to suit you. Much better to take (for example) 8 injections a day and feel good than only having 2 and feeling rubbish!

The Ragnar Hanas book Redkite recommended is great - so get a hold of a copy if you can.
I've been diagnosed for 14 years, but I'm re-reading the book again just to brush up on my skills.

Hope you're okay and adjusting to this massive life change.

Hi Marc, also relatively new (6 weeks) on basal Bolus, so just learning too. Welcome to the forum 🙂

Welcome Marc, you are getting good care and the flexibility of basal/bolus is brilliant.

Great forum here i joined in June and all these people are wonderful

Welcome to the forum Marc 🙂
