Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello. I'm a type 2 diabetic and have been for around eight years. My blood sugars readings have been up and down over the years and I think I've been in denial about how serious the condition really is. I'm very much struggling now because I have an autoimmune disease and the medication is playing havoc with my Diabetes. I'm on tablets and I know I must get a grip on my eating and exercise, but I just can't seem to do it. I'm hoping that with a bit of support from someone on this forum, I'll be able to do it. It's very nice to be on this forum and I feel that I am with like-minded people now. Thank you

Welcome to the forum. Sorry that your medication is interfering with being able to manage your diabetes better. You have said you are Type 2 but keep in mind that autoimmune conditions do go hand in hand so you may actually be Type 1 but obviously that depends on clinical presentation. Is it steroids you are taking as they do have a reputation for making diabetes more difficult and for causing weight gain so it can become a bit of a losing battle unless you are vigilant.
Are you on any medication for your diabetes as that will be a consideration in terms of what may be a suitable dietary approach.
If you are not on anything at the moment or just on metformin then many find a low carb approach succesful in reducing their HbA1C and losing weight. Have a look at this link as it may give you some ideas for modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hello @Trisha Smith and welcome to the forums.
There are many posts on here about Type 2 and a very powerful search option available top right of this page. It will allow you to put several keywords in and try to include them in its results answer e.g. search [type 2 diabetic, diet]

Best

Hi Leadinglights and thanks for your reply. Yes, I'm taking Steroids and they are playing havoc with everything. I've put on a stone and a half in seven months and my doctor informed me that my latest HbA1c result was 82. I'm really struggling at the moment trying to deal with it all, but I'm hoping that with a bit of help and advice, I may be able to help myself a bit more. I take four Metformin daily, Daplalaflozin and have just been put on Gliclazide. I will definitely look at the link you sent me.

@Trisha Smith Because you’re on Gliclazide, be careful about reducing carbs too much (too few could cause low blood sugar). I believe Dapaglifloxin can also increase the risk of ketoacidosis. I’ll tag @Lucyr because I think she knows about this, if I remember correctly.

Yes with any of the flozins low carb isn’t recommended because of the DKA risk. I had DKA on them but didn’t low carb it was just because my insulin production is low.

You can reduce carbs on them but it’s usually recommended not to go too extreme, and to stick nearer the 130g that is usually considered the upper border of “low carb” than going too far below it.

That means eating some carbs with each meal but smaller portions of carb and more of the veg and protein basically

Yes definitely be cautious of going too low carb with the medication you are now taking. But you should have been prescribed a monitor and test strips so you can keep an eye on what suits you.
My OH was on steroids for 3 months and put on loads of weight and is so struggling to lose it despite being on the same low carb regime as me.
