Type 2
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes back in April last year at the age of 70. I initially went to the GP because I was experiencing weight loss and I had no idea why, I weighed 8st 4lb. My HbA1C level was 94, after several tests I was put on Metformin with a steadily increasing dose until I reached 4x 500mg daily. My HbA1C levels have dropped and now remain fairly static at 59. At my recent annual review the nurse recommended I start taking Jardiance (1x10mg daily) to help bring the level down further and continue with my regular dose of Metformin. I am into my 5th day of taking this drug but I’m worried I will lose more weight, I am just over 8 stone and would really like to be a few pounds heavier. Does anyone else have experience of Jardiance who doesn’t want to lose more weight?

Hi there, I can understand your concerns about weight changes while managing diabetes. Jardiance can cause weight loss in some individuals, but this effect may vary. It's essential to communicate with your healthcare provider about your concerns so they can adjust your treatment plan accordingly. They can also assess whether Jardiance is the right choice for you and suggest ways to help maintain a healthy weight. It’s great that you're being proactive in managing your health, and always feel free to ask your provider for personalized advice. We are here to listen to any other narrative or point of view on this.

Did they test you for type 1? Unexplained weight loss is a symptom of type 1

Thanks for your advice, I will contact the GP surgery if my weight decreases.

I’m diagnosed with Type 2, I think my age and less efficient insulin production is the cause. Many of the women on my Dad’s side of the family developed diabetes late in life. Thanks for your reply.

Make sure you are eating plenty of protein and healthy fats to compensate for the reduction in carbs that presumably will have made to improve blood glucose levels.

I was also losing weight prior to diagnosis and wanted to regain some weight and muscle mass at the same time as getting my blood glucose levels down. I reduced my carbs but adjusted the fat and protein in my diet to keep my calorie intake to 2000 a day.
I was prescribed gliclazide which can cause weight gain in some people as my diabetes nurse thought it would be a better option than jardiance at this stage.
I have gained a few pounds over 6 months which I am happy with. More importantly I am eating much less ( was eating 4000 plus calories a day) and don't feel hungry all the time. HbA1c is down from 165 to 61 so that is also going in the right direction
