Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I have just been diagnosed with type 2 at the age of 53. As well as my parents, I have 2 brothers and 3 sisters with diabetes which runs through out the family no matter how careful I have been.

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Welcome Ann, you will find lots of help here from very friendly people.
I was diagnosed 6 years ago at the age of 67, and none of my family had diabetes 🙂

Are you on any medication ?.

John

Hi Ann and welcome to the forum I was diagnosed at 26 with no type 2s in my family, there's a good section in the links bit of the forum which will help you greatly, ask anything on here though and they will always be someone about to help x

Hi Ann, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it does sound as though you have quite a family tradition going on there! I hope your siblings are coping well with their diabetes. It's not the greatest thing to be diagnosed with, but it can be managed well with a little work and lots of knowledge. I'd recommend having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter as a starter, and a good investment would be Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - highly recommended by many of our members 🙂 There are many more good links in our Useful links thread.

Are you on any medication for your diabetes, and have you be prescribed a meter and test strips so that you can test your reactions to different meals? This is the best way to get to grips with things - start a food diary and write down everything you eat and drink, including the carb contents. This will help you buikd up a picture of what your intake is, and perhaps highlight areas where small modifications could be made to make the diet more diabetes-friendly. It will also help you when you come to discuss things with your GP or a dietician.

Please ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help you out! 🙂

Tablets straight away as my blood sugar is 26. Doc took a blood test after a series of very painful boils!!! which took a long time to heal. My fault as I suffered in silence rather than going to seek help.

I have an appointment to check my blood in two weeks time before being refered to Diabetes clinic. I live away from Liverpool where my family live so any advice would be a great help. Obviously cutting out all sugar as of now for starters. My husband is going to support me by sharing the same diet, so any recommended books or links to web sites most welcome.

Welcome to the forum Ann 🙂 I was diagnosed at 35 and so there are at least 5 members of my family who are or were diabetic.

Amazon have a great book called diabetes type 2- the first of diabetes by gretchen Becker that's a great book.

Your diagnosis sounds like mine I ended up in hospital gettin surgery on a abscess cause I suffered in silence for weeks

A very good diet to follow is the GL (Glycaemic Load) diet. It's a refinement of GI (Glycaemic Index) and explains how to eat in order to get a slow and steady release of energy which is much gentler on your blood sugar levels. A good introduction is The GL Diet for Dummies 🙂

Note that it is not just sugar, but all carbohydrates that will raise blood sugar levels, but some types will raise them faster than others. So, for example, white bread is one of the worst things you can eat, whereas wholegrain, seeded bread is much better.

Wow. Thanks for all the help already. I have just placed an order for the book and planning my(our) meals for next week via the excellant links provided.

Take care out there.

xxx Ann

Looking fwd to getting to know you xx

Sorry took so long to reply. Bought the Gretchen Becker book which is very intresting as you take it all in little by little and learn not to blame yourself. Tablets seem to be working and have lost 6 lbs already. Fingers crossed my first clinic will help loads.
