Relationship to Diabetes

Hello,

Just stumbled across this board and thought I'd register.

I'm Dawn, 38 years old and live in Sale, Cheshire. I've been a Type 1 Diabetic for 2.5 years. Sometimes I struggle with it and its gets me down.

Before I went out socially without thinking about what and when to eat and drink. I still go out and have a good social life but there is so much to think about and my friends really fuss. Eg. test sugars, have you got everything etc...

I am trying to find a diabetic group to meet with in my area to try and get some advise and listen to what other type 1 diabetics have experienced with the condition. What are your thoughts on this has anyone joined or been to a group meeting. Are they helpful 🙂🙂

good afternoon and a warm welcome dawny
they are currently no groups in my area so at the moment im just using this place to meet peeps get advice etc etc . i think every area should have a group these would prove invaluble to us all , i for one would definetly want one in the north east of my area

Hi Dawney

Welcome to the forum...your in the right place for help, support, advice and a good old rant/chat.

I have'nt got any experience with the support groups ect..there are none in our area..so cant advise you on that..however there are a few on here that are active members in some..and am sure they will be able to point you in the right direction.

You have good friends...even thought they fuss...you mean a lot to them and in there way they are trying to help..🙂

Hi Dawn, welcome to the forum! I know exactly what you mean about losing the spontaneity of just being able to go out and enjoy yourself, it can be a bind at times. I've only been diagnosed a year, and I think whilst it's good that I have got this later in life rather than from childhood, it is also difficult to shake off the feeling of freedom you had for all of your adult life to this point. Regarding your well-meaning friends, it might be worth printing off the 'Diabetes Etiquette Card' - this explains to non-diabetics a little of what you may or may not be comfortable with. You may not agree with all it says, but you could point out the bits that do - hopefully, as your friends they will understand you are not trying to offend them in any way!

As for groups of Type 1's - I don't know of any specifically. I think the majority of Diabetes UK's groups tend to cater for Type 2's as they are by far the majority of diabetics. Whilst we share a lot in common with other diabetic types, treatments and experiences may differ considerably, so I can understand you wanting to meet others in the same boat as you. The best I can recommend is to drop in here as often as you can, and I'm sure you'll make many friends in this 'virtual' community - there may even be others in your local area and you could arrange informal get-togethers (I think we have a few members in the Cheshire area).

Welcome!:D
