Yes I think the 2-3(ish) guide partly springs from the old BG recommendations for T2, which were 4-7 before meals and no higher than 8.5 by 2hrs after meals. So if you were mid-range at, say, 6… you would have about 2.5 (between 2-3) of wiggle room to stay in target.
The other observation I‘ve made over the years, is that if you can manage to keep the ‘meal rises’ relatively modest at around 2-3, it doesn’t matter quite so much what the actual numbers are in the early days. Keeping the rises small, allows the average numbers to gently come down on their own. And a gentle change in BG levels is much easier on the body than rapid swings from high averages to sudden low averages. 🙂
