Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Good morning.
Diagnosed @age 68 in 2017. Still learning. BG @ dx 108. Now 43.

Hi and welcome

There are a lot of us late starters with Type 1 on the forum. Did they identify you as Type 1 straight away or did you go through a period of Type 2 meds before they diagnosed Type1

Looks like you have great control with an HbA1c of 43. Do you get many hypos?
Are you on MDI or a pump?
Which insulin(s) do you use?
Do you have Freestyle Libre?

Sorry, that looks like the Spanish inquisition! Just trying to get an idea of where you are at with your diabetes so that we can relate to you better.

Is there anything particular which brings you to the forum? Connecting with others is really helpful as the shared experiences of those facing the same challenges is invaluable. It is also great for mental support as we all know that diabetes can be frustrating some times and sharing your frustrations with people who understand is sometimes better than talking it out on family and friends who perhaps don't really "get it".

Anyway, I hope you are able to share some of your experience and benefit from that of others here.

Welcome to the forum @ACB from another late starter with T1.
Glad that you have found us. There are quite a few in here diagnosed as adults.

You have certainly got to grips with your levels, looking at your HbA1c.
Any tips for others?

If you have any questions fire away. Nothing is considered silly on here.
Also if you would like to tell us what insulin(s) you are using that can help people to adjust their answers.

Hi. I was diagnosed type 1 straight away. Was admitted on emergency order with DKA . Only symptom was extreme thirst. And then blurred vision. Hbaic was 108 on admission but I still felt fine. 24 hrs in hospital . Prescribed 20 units Lantus . 3 daysattending outpatients. And so began my self management. Steep learning curve. Now on lantus and novorapid seems somewhat erratic in the time it takes to kick in. Have a very good consultant and hospital team. Got the Libre last year. A lifechanger and lifelifter.

As you say the Libre is a real eye opener. Glad to hear that you have a supportive team around you. That makes so much difference.

I used the Libre traces from those to adjust the timing of my pre meal Bolus. I had originally been told to inject with the meal, but now inject before each one (except when out at a restaurant- that was a long time ago!). My timings are different through the day, and I also adjust this according to my BG readings at the time.

Then there are the other factors that impact on the levels: exercise, fat content of meal, the weather, .... So it is no wonder things wobble at times.

Hello and welcome to the forum @ACB 🙂

This is very worrying, I didn't realise you could be diagnosed at such a late stage?! :(

You can get Type 1 at any age.
I knew that really, but thought there must be some kind of cut off point, it's diabolical. I will be adding to my nightly prayers Please God don't let me get type 1 I've got enough afflictions. :( I know my limitations, I couldn't manage type 1 and have enormous admiration for those that do.

You say you couldn't manage type 1 but when it's a matter of life and death you do the utmost to manage. I never knew anyone with type 1 no family history. But 3+ years on. I'm still vertical and still learning. Every day is a challenge but we can support each other. And make time for ourselves.

Welcome to the forum @ACB

Sounds like you are making a great job of playing at being your own pancreas so far 🙂

Glad you have joined the forum - most of us T1s knew hardly any other people with T1 before ‘meeting‘ electronically - but it’s a great support to have, and it can be a very useful sounding board and there are many shoulders to lean on and ears to bend when diabetes throws a spanner in the works.

Thank you . Still internally debating whether to have the vaccine.

I'll be the same age as you in April - why the heck wouldn't you have it?

I've had flu once over 20 years ago. OMG was I ill? Even my hair hurt. I started to cry one day but stopped because it hurt too much so just collapsed on the bed again and only got out of it when I needed the loo for approx a week.

And CV19 is worse than normal flu .....

It's bad enough not being able to see the kids, grandkids and their kids living a few miles away regularly - but some more of them are in the next county and the one after that. Met the youngest for an hour last July. Poor little kid will most likely be terrified next time and who can blame him?

I want to have as much immunity as I can get before I put either myself or any other person whether I know them or not, at potential risk.

Thank you . Still internally debating whether to have the vaccine.

I’ve had mine. Almost no side effects, just a slight bump in BGs for a few days.

The data are becoming clearer that the effects are impressive even after the first dose, and especially after the booster. And with T1 if you get covid badly, it can be really nasty - so I was keen to improve my chances in the even that I pick up Covid at any point.

Plus the thought of any inpatient stay with T1 gives me the heebiejeebies 😱
