Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello there, I have just joined this forum. I have type 2 diabetes plus mild asthma. I was diagnosed in March last year, tried the diet control, lost a stone in weight but that didnt work so went on Metformin (1 x 500mg tab twice a day), lost another stone, now weigh nine and a half stone and had to have full new wardrobe as I am now a size twelve - brilliant!! Diabetes didnt settle so dose upped to 2 x 500mg twice a day. BG is still all over the place! I try not to even look at sugar!!! I have found I am fine on the Metformin (stomache wise!) unless I have had a naughty day, if I have been out & had a meal with a glass of vino & a pudding, I feel really rubbish & rather dodgey (stomache wise again!!!), so I reckon that my body, metformin & puddings/booze just don't mix! My treat now is a tangerine! Just had bloods done for review & found that potassium level high so have to go back for another blood test on Thursday (tomorrow - ouch! - still bruised from last one). Hope that is all ok, feel like I've got enough to deal with right now, just had to change my asthma inhaler too because the others weren't working too well. Anyway, am trying to be healthy, wise & happy. Enjoying the odd bit of gardening, when the frost hasn't turned the earth to concrete! Anyway, that's me in a nutshell. Not sure about forums as have never done one before, so it's all new to me. Have a good day to whoever may be reading this!!! Bye for now.

Willerby hi and a warm welcome to the forum, dont worry this is a great place we dont expect nothing from anyone so post as much or as little as you want x
Have a good look around and get yourself aqquainted with the forum.Good luck with your appointment tomorrow, dont worry you will get used to the bruises my arms look like they have been punched by Mike Tyson by the time my doc has finished with me lol.

Welcome to the forums Willerby12 🙂

Well done on the weight loss. Has anyone mentioned that it's not just sugars you have to watch in your diet - but other forms of carbohydrate as well?

Are you self testing or just having the periodic blood tests?

I check my blood regularly, not always every day, but at least every other & at different times & try my best to eat a good balanced diet - hubby cooking tonight - Pork chops, carrots, broccolli & new potatoes - Yummy!! Everything in moderation, plus lots of exercise (I try!! - walking my dog & gardening is about the best I do - must try harder - I know!). I find my blood is good around mid-day, I even had a 4.1 on Sunday! Then last night before bed I got a 14.1 - Pah! - must have been the sausages for tea! Thanks for getting in touch though, nice to know I'm not on my own.

Hello, I've just joined today too. Forums are great for help from people living with diabetes rather than medics.
Good luck!

Hi Willerby12, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds like you are doing all the right things, except you are getting those occasional highs. I would think that this can only be down to what you have eaten that evening - as you probably know all carbohydrate has the potential to raise your blood sugar levels, and if they are being raised unusually high following a meal then the chances are that you ate something that either your body doesn't tolerate well at all, or perhaps it is the portion size that it can't cope with. I'm not suggesting that you have big portions of anything - it can be a very individual thing, and for some people even the tiniest amount of, for example, mashed potato, can send their levels high.

In which case, it's a good idea to start keeping a food diary and have a good testing regime, such as that described in Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S . Once you have discovered what foods to avoid your levels will improve and you won't need to test so much, just when you want to try something new 🙂 I'd also suggest getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - even though you are already nearly a year in, there may be a lot of new information in it for you to consider 🙂

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly', so fire away! Many congratulations on your weight loss! 🙂

Hi Willerby, welcome from me too. You have done well with the weight loss, congratulations.

I found that I had to really watch the carbs, which I always liked, and now have as balanced a meal as possible, loads of veg, not that keen on them but fills me up, but only a tiny potato, sadly.

Hiya Willerby

It's all carbohydrate that effects our BG, wherever it comes from - not just sugar and really obvious things like bread, cake etc. Start reading labels. And more or less ignore the bit under the carb value 'of which sugar - blah'.

Re sausage, they are meat, so no carb? - wrong! They have rusk in them, which is carb. Ones with a higher meat content are better, but are also usually a fair bit more expensive. For interest cos I've just looked - Richmond extra thick pork sausage are 7.8g carb per sausage. They contain both wheat rusk and potato starch. As a T1 injecting insulin to deal with carbs, I couldn't ignore them. If I had 4, that's 30g, equivalent to 3 'egg sized' boiled spuds ...... so if I had those spuds with my 4 sausages and only counted the spuds and gave the insulin for them, my BG would shoot up by 9.0mmol/L. Because I've just eaten '6 spuds' and only shot for 3.

Re the meal out - I'd doubt if the wine would cause to much problem frankly, unless it was very sweet wine; because alcohol itself lowers BG somewhat and therefore we live in hope that the carbs and the alcohol would negate each other. Which leaves the culprit firmly as the pudding 😱

Welcome to the forum Willerby 🙂

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome. I will no doubt flit in & out of this site but it is good to have a few words with people who understand diabetes.

Thanks for the input - I try my best to cut down the carbs - but cutting out altogether, I have been told, would be detrimental too - so it's just a case of balancing everything, I suppose. I adore carrots, they make up the bulk on my plate, where people would maybe have loads of potatoes, I have carrots. I'm looking forward to growing my own again this year, as I have just recently moved. Lots of stuff to do in the garden that should keep me fit & a big Labrador who needs lots of walkies. I always buy my sausages from my local butchers, he makes his own & they are delicious, not a lot of rusk in these ones, but all sausages are fatty, I'm not kidding myself, sausages are definately a treat!! I cant stand sweet wine, the dryer the better for me - so thats a plus. I tend not to buy white bread, mostly granary & usually just have that at lunchtime as a sandwich. In the summer I bring in a salad for lunch made at home in a tupperware tub, loads of crunchy lettuce & in the winter I like to make my own soup - my husband loves my carrot soup & so easy to make. I like to cook & don't like what we call 'Ding Dinners' (microwave food). I have to confess to trying to find the ultimate diabetics pudding - have tried using Splenda, but it makes me feel sickly, so have given that a side kick. Oooh look at all my waffle - I'm good at that once I get going!! Sorry folks!!
