Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there,

Just thought I would drop in and say hi. I've just turned 30 was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes this morning and am reeling a little from it. I asked for a diabetes check myself two months ago which came back negative. I've been feeling awful for a while now so asked for a blood test for anemia - and they came back to me and said that I do have diabetes after all. Apparantly it's not too severe and they have put me on pills to get it under control, then they hope that I will be able to control it with my diet in the long run.

I have so many questions though, like:
What kind of life expectancy is there with Type 2? Reports on the web tend to be varied.
Is it safe to drink 1-2 fizzy drinks a day?
I get veruccas from time to time from swimming lots when I was a kid (I have one now) - is that something I should be worried about now?
My husband and I were planning to start our own family in a couple of years - is it dangerous to be pregnant?

I don't see the diabetes nurse until Monday and my head is spinning with all these questions! Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Angie, welcome to the forum🙂 This must be a very difficult day for you, but try to keep calm. To quicky answer your questions, fizzy drinks of the 'diet' variety are fine - the other (sugary) ones will elevate your blood sugar levels. Life expectancy is considerably improved - with the right care and some effort on your behalf, there's no reason why you shouldn't live a full and active life like anyone else. Many advances have been made, and are being made all the time. I see no reason why I shouldn't live as long as I expected to before diagnosis, and a lot of people find that the motivation to improve diet and lifestyle actually improves the quality (and quantity!) of life!

Pregnancy is also an option - as you will read here in the pregnancy section, there can be additional tests and closer monitoring, but no reason why you shouldn't have healthy babies like anyone else!

There is a lot to learn, but you don't need to learn it all at once, so try to stay calm and take in what you can. Ask any questions you may have and we'll try our best to answer them🙂

p.s. re:verrucas. You should get to see a podiatrist who will check your feet and will be able to tell you of the best treatment options - not all off-the-counter solutions are suitable for diabetics.

Hi Angie,

I'm 32 and was just diagnosed (type 2) last week. I've no real advice but just wanted to say you're not the only one - and if you need a natter just shout 🙂

Hi Angie just wanted to say hello and welcome to the forum I'm 27 weeks pregnant and just wanted to reassure you about getting pregnant as long as your good with your control you should have a healthy baby. If your thinking about trying soon you should speak to your diabetes clinic at your hopsital and they'll give you advice and help. Good news is as a diabetic mum to be we get growth scans on top of the two normal scans so we have 6 in total which means you get to see the baby much more 😉

hi angie

you sound very scared, i was very scared too when i discovered i was diabetic too but please beleive me when i tell you that it is ok for you to be scared, the people on this forum are great and very wise.

Follow everything that your gp and team tell you and you will be fine, and there is always someone on here who will offer you the support you need and offer you help if you need it.

Hi there Angie,

I was diagnosed as type two about a week and a half after my 32nd birthday. Massive shock for me too. My diabtetes nurse told me that i could do anything i wanted the same as a non-diabetic could, except possibly drive a cab. If you want to start a family, you just need to let your GP/ healthcare team know, it's not impossible by any means. As for the fizzy drinks, well, i've had to switch from full fat/sugar coca-cola to Pepsi Max (I don't like diet coke) but that's it. Kinda miss cherry-coke though.:(

It's scary, i know, but it gets easier to get your head around eventually. A year ago i was a gibbering mess prone to bursting into tears at the mere mention of the d word. These days there are good days and bad days (don't get me after a visit to my GP, that really messes me up...) but the bad days get fewer and further between.

Best wishes

Rachel
