Type 2
Hi every one, so just found out i have type2, so i have had hypos for about 4 years just thought it was me growing up etc,, my misses called them weird outs!! i have had trouble with eye sight and heart palps etc and have a phsycical job ( boat builder ) sorry for spelling, not my strong point...found out 2 days ago,im 35 and to be honest so scared! i have bad asthma all my life which is sorter controlled and have my first appointment with diabetes nurse in one week,
I have done my research on the net about type 2, it's been hard telling my family as it just seems like a word with no purpose, i have been given tablets but have read it is a progressive disease??? my doc wants me to go for a scan next week so once again worried about that to as the the diabetes was first picked up on a routene blood test, i hate takening tablets as it is!! i no it sounds daft, just feel lonely right now and am glad there is this web site so you can chat to others, by the way my name is ant :0)

Hi jalapino, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but please don't panic - the good news is that diabetes can be managed well so that it doesn't have to have a negative impact on your life. In fact, many people find that the diagnosis kick starts them to make adaptations to their diet and activity levels that leads to a much happier and healthier person! 🙂

It takes a little while to get used to everything, so I would suggest that a good start would be to read Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and piuck up a copy of the highly-recommended book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. These will all help you to gain an understanding of diabetes, what to expect, and what you can do about it.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help out! No question is considered 'silly', so ask away! 🙂

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure I concur with this progressive malarky entirely. For me, changing my lifestyle and getting to grips with my excess weight has improved my health no end. So much so I was able to come off the pills and control my diabetes entirely via diet and exercise. Mind you, I think I am lucky because my pancreas is still pumping out the insulin in reasonable quantities. My problem was mostly down to what is known as insulin resistance (i.e. I wasn't using the insulin properly because I was overweight).

Like you, at the start, I had a few 'scared' moments, but now take it in my stride. I hope the same applies to you too.

Good luck,

Andy 🙂

Thankyou andy nice to talk to others, i so hope it will be controlled by diet, i have a very phisical job so exercise is not a problem but i do like a drink which is a problem, i am slightey over weight and have lost 1 stone 1 month before i found out i had type 2, and am still loseing weight as i just want to be a healthy size before i found out i had type 2, i used dia sticks which i have used for 1 month before i found out, and am always around ++++ 20 which is not wonderfull and am still getting to grips with the numbers etc

Hello Jalapino, welcome aboard!!!! It is a bit of a shock to find out you are diabetic from a blood check for something else, as happened to me too.

It probably seems abit daunting at first, too much to find out and take in, but it will all settle down and you will get to grips with it.

Take it bit by bit and in the meantime perhaps reduce those refined carbs like white rice, white bread, potatoes and pasta, if you have them. That should help to get your readings down whilst you are waiting for your nurse appointment.

Thankyou very much for the tips and comments as it all helps, and makes it easier that knowing that i am not the only one feeling lonely and confused, as some of my family think that it's just a word, until you find out you have it!!...then it's a hole different matter :0)

Hi ant. Welcome.🙂

Always better to be diagnosed with it than have it and not know.🙂

I always found it annoying to have to explain to everyone what it is time and again. But word will get round eventually I'm sure.

It does sound like your doctor is being thorough which is a good sign.🙂

Welcome Jalapino. I'm pretty new to this myself so I know how you feel, there is a lot to take in and some contradictory advice, but this place seems to have a balanced view and is of course people who actually have the condition rather than doctors who sometimes only have the theory. You have one advantage in that you don't have to start exercising like I do. Think positive and take control seems to be the way to go.
