Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all

Similar to previous threads, i'm brand new to this website. I've been a type 1 for 27 years (in about 3 weeks), and although my Diabetes control is largely ok day to day (last HBa1C was 52 or 6.8% I think), I'm still suffering with all sorts of little side issues; and a small host of other problems. And thought getting it off of my chest might help (and you all look a nice bunch 🙂 )

As well as Diabetes, I have Epilepsy (diag in 1993, last fit in 2006 so pretty well controlled now), and more recently diagnosed with another auto immune illness in Sarcoidosis (Nov 2012). I am having eye/nose surgery next week along the lines of a double external DCR (to help with my sarcoid inflammed blocked tearducts). I also suffer from Leukapenia (low WBC count), and have very mild recurrent retinopathy.

I do from time to time get a little cheesed off with my lot, so thought I'd dip my toe in here and see if anyone else suffers similar. Problems shared are halved and all that. My partner, children and sarcastic sense of humour normally always see me through, but it's nice to have understanding aqaintances in similar positions.

So nice to meet you all, hope you're all having a good day

Hi Westerner, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear that you have additional things to deal with besides the diabetes. I hope that the surgery goes well for you next week 🙂

We've got quite a few members with a few decades under their belts, so I'm sure you'll have a lot in common (rusty harpoon needles, boiling up insulin before you can use it etc. 😉). I've only got just over 6 years, so it's encouraging to hear from someone who has got through the wilderness years relatively unscathed without all the new-fangled gubbins we have now to spoil us! 🙂

Thankyou Northerner

I also suffer from lack of originality in choosing a username. You can take all the credit in providing me with sufficient inspiration 🙂

Like it 🙂 Being a Northerner, I can't imagine anyone admitting to being a 'Southerner' though! :D

Welcome Westerner.. I too am an old hand at this diabetes stuff - 55 years but doing fine apart from a couple of complications. Lots of friendly people here with shed loads of experience.

I'd admit to being a Southerner! 🙂

I do actually originate from Gloucestershire which is universally West Country, and the land of accents akin to "alright my luvver" etc etc; that could also qualify me as a Southerner (of the South West variety); but I moved North to Worcestershire; but not far enough to qualify as a West Midlander............... ha ha

I'll stick with Westerner!!!!

Thank you all!

Hello and welcome from an adopted Easterner

Welcome "Westener" 🙂 You sound like you have your hands full. Good luck with everything.

Hello and welcome Westerner 🙂

I was diagnosed at Worcester Royal Infirmary (think it has now been replaced) in the days of harpoon reusable needles and injecting oranges to get the feel of it!

You sound as if you have a lot to deal with on top of diabetes, good luck with your upcoming surgery. This forum is very friendly and supportive with loads of experience from all the points of the compass 🙂

Yes flower I too was given an orange to practice on in Gloucester Royal in '87! At the same time my Mother was shown how to inject using oranges, and then trying for real on me with distilled water. She couldn't bring herself to do it, she couldn't break the skin and it all ran down my leg! Bless!

Thanks for all of your support.

Welcome to the forum westerner. I landed right in the middle! Sorry to hear you have so much to contend with. I hope you find someone with similar experience.
