Hello all. I was diagnosed type 1 a couple of weeks ago. Like a lot of you on this thread - it's been real up and down since getting my head around it all but I'm getting there. I'm on Levemir twice a day and NovoRapid with meals. I've also had some really good advice from the specialist nurses and dietitian but it's good to hear it from those living it.

The tricky bit for me, as a dad of 3 kids age 5 and under, is getting my own meals sorted out alongside theirs. Evening meals aren't so bad but breakfast and lunch needs tweaking.

I'm encouraged to know that you guys are out there and, in an odd way, I'm glad to become part of this community.

It's good to meet you.

Hi John-Luke, it cetainly can be a rollercoaster! I'm not type 1 so can't comment on that, but welcome to the forum and to this lovely community 🙂 Feel free to ask questions, complain, rant or just generally chatter :D

Hi John-Luke and welcome. I'm type two so can't comment on type 1 requirements etc. But you'll get plenty of great advice here. When talking to friends about my situation, I tell them that, because I'm on my own and retired, I have the time and opportunity to plan meals at leisure. It must be terribly difficult for people who have young families and are still working, so I sympathise with your problem. It's early days and I'm sure you'll get a workable meal routine established soon. Have a wee surf around the other forums here and you'll get plenty of information.

Welcome 🙂. Don't be afraid to ask anything - people here are incredibly knowledgeable and really supportive

What are you having trouble with any more than you did before, apart from carb counting it and calculating the insulin? - in which case although you still have to do the counting, there are specialist meters available (the Insulix or the Accu Chek Expert) which will calculate your insulin dose. If it's because your kids demand to have their plates put in front of em immediately you start putting it out - then tell em Tuff! - my needs take priority so you - just like me - will have to wait a minute before we can all sit down and eat.

If you don't keep well - you can't look after them!

I don't mean if either of them was in trouble - but you have to rearrange your own priorities when you have T1 - it's just another new habit you need to get into - like eg testing and jabbing and ordering prescriptions on time.

Or - feed them and you at different times so you aren't trying to do several things at once. You can still eat more or less the same things so it ain't like you need to change your diet much, if at all providing you were all eating sensibly before.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome and sounds like you are doing very well, managing a evening meal with three under five and your own meal is amazing! I am sure you will soon work out the other meals. It is great you are getting good advice and do ask us anything.
