Hi Bracken8 - it's good to meet you.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis!

I'm a Type 2 myself, diagnosed nine years ago. I myself learnt very little in the first eight years - however, I've made up for things over the last twelve months especially since I came to these diabetes forums. Arriving here early will certainly help you a lot.

The most important lesson that I have learnt is the importance of cutting back dramatically on the starchy carbohydrates that I eat - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes mainly - but also rice and and pasta. Doing that leads to a very big and sudden lowering of blood glucose levels for most Type 2s.

Changing the diet is nothing too difficult at all as far as I am concerned.

Diet is the way to go! Exercise and weight loss may help too but the biggest improvement comes with cutting back dramatically on the carbohydrates - especially the starchy ones mentioned above.

Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best wishes - John

Believe me you are not the only one but at least you can blame the blood sugars! Even those of us who have been living with Type 2 for a while can find Christmas a bit of a challenge - balancing "feasting" with our bodies' ability to cope is a tightrope. Please bear in mind too that it can take a good while to get your head around what works for you in terms of diet. I found a good place to start was the Diabetes UK virtual supermarket in understanding the balance of my diet but I have since found that the standard advice is to heavy on the carbs for me

The main thing that affects many of us badly is the starchy carbs (pasta, pastry, bread, potatoes and, yes, sugar - especially in fizzy drinks) so go carefully on those. Avoid so-called diabetic foods as they can have bad effects on your tummy and often are nearly as high in carbohydrates as the non-diabetic version. Have a look in the recommended books section on here - in my view Type 2 Diabetes - the First Year is highly worth the investment in both cost and the time to read it

If weather is not too bad where you are then many of us find a good walk helps bring our blood glucose down - something that is fairly traditional for many families on Boxing Day.

good morning and welcome to the site bracken, i myself will be facing my first xmas with diabetes i was diagnosed in feb, at first i thout oh no how am i going to get through it , the usual of choccies as pressies or the mass of calories in a yule log or xmas pud, but i came to the conclusion if i beat myself up over it, it will only spoil my xmas and i wont let diabetes control me that way, im going to eat my xmas lunch as usual and only thing im doing diffirent is im not having any choccies, or pudding but i am treating myself to some drink instead which will be bucks fizz, they is nothing a diabetic cant have it is just in small amounts and in moderation. this condition does not have to hinder us ,as been suggested already a walk after meal can help and lower the levels it will do you good and walk off all the grub x 🙂

p.s the book reccommended by vanessa gretchen becker- type 2- the first year is a must!
