Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I'm only 6 months diagnosed - am terrified - any advice please ?
I live alone so am even more nervous about sugar levels
I don't know what to do - I am at the point of giving up
How can I work?
I want to work - I hate being at home all day but I am scared to death :(

Did you have a job before you were diagnosed and if so, why on earth do you think you now can't do it? ou are still you and always will be!

How are your team educating you - carb counting and dose adjustment wise I mean - to stop you being so scared?

What reading material have they suggested - eg Diabetes UK Guide to Type 1? - not sure but you may be able to access it online. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/learningzone

Do you have other physical conditions Chiffon or psychological/mental health issues? What are your main barriers to working? Are you having lots of hypos? Just trying to understand what’s happening with you because I’m sure you’ll appreciate most people with type 1 live perfectly normal lives and work which is probably why the DWP have refused ESA.

No Trophy I didnt have a job before diagnosis - I was on esa - due to relationship problems and stress, anxiety etc - I am so scared :(

Amigo - main barriers are I am petrified of hypos - the thought of collapsing in front of people
Ive always been a very private person and the thought of even having to tell people
SOrry to sound so desperate :(

What are you scared about? Maybe we can help with any fears? As others have said, type 1 should not prevent you leading a full and normal life.

Are you receiving any psychological support/ counselling Chiffon? You sound in serious need of help and support both physically and emotionally. Maybe the relationship was emotionally damaging to you.

Are you appealing the ESA decision?

Hypos - terrified of having one and being out of control:(
Diagnosed 6 months ago, and have kept levels around 15 as live alone and too scared :(
I am so sorry to be such a pain :(
Thank u SO much for caring - crying my eyes out x

Yes I am appealing the esa decision and I agree I need help xxx

Have you discussed these feelings with your GP or specialist nurse Kate? You need a referral for psychological support and perhaps medication if you’re not already on it.

You’re not a pain...you are in pain...it’s a different thing. I’m not type 1 so others will need to advise on the management of that but it’s clear you’re in need of help. Hopefully somebody is helping you to appeal the ESA decision. Type 1 shouldn’t stop you living your life but I sense this started long before the diagnosis.

Thanks so much AMigoxxxxxx Youre right - this started 8 years ago when the ex persuaded the teenagers to go live with him. I promise I did nothing wrong - i went fro one refuge to another to keep them safe but he won in the end :(
Thanks so much everyone for responding - I'll stop crying and wake up totally embarrassed - I 'm actually a Psychologist so u can imagine.
I will SO be here for all of you when I get throught this blip
Thank you xxxxxxx Thanks for being there and for caring xxxxxx

Kate, have you looked for a diabetes support group in your area. Some have speakers who may be able to provide useful information. Hopefully you'll feel more comfortable talking to people there.
I understand the feeling you have no control, and the fear. I'm sorry it's so bad for you.

Kate, you need to get sorted ASAP. :( I can understand your fear of hypos (I think most of us dread them, they're not at all pleasant), but keeping your levels artificially high is not the answer, due to the serious risk of complications if you continue long-term. Take it from me, you do not want to end up on dialysis, spending three days a week either waiting to be collected, lying on a bed for four hours and unable to move one arm, waiting to be taken home again (that once took me another 4 hours{}), or arriving home weak, dizzy and too shattered to do much for the rest of the afternoon/evening 😱 — and the other four days feeling drained and lacking in energy. 🙄 That's just one scenario which awaits if you have bad (or no) control for too long. o_O

Sorry to be alarmist, and possibly add to your fears, but you need to bear this in mind and not let it happen to you. 😱 Still, welcome to the forum; we're a supportive lot, and the only dumb question is the one which doesn't get asked. 🙂

Hi Kate

Welcome to the forum. I hope you get the help you need soon and start feeling better in yourself. There are lots of friendly and knowledgeable people on here who will advise you. Good luck!

Hi Kate. Please phone your GP today for an appointment and ask for some help. They will listen and give you the support you need. It’s a great idea to get in touch with others in the same position in your area. Our surgery has a Diabetes support group of their own, You don’t have to battle through this alone I promise. This forum is a great support and will help, but you need something closer to home too. Make the call - I’m certain you won’t regret it. Keep in touch. Katie.xx

Thank you SO much everyone - I'm OK and feeling a little stupid this morning. I think it all got on top of me last night when I posted. I promise, I'm OK and have sent off the referral that the DSN gave me for counselling. Very mortifed at my post, as I'm such a private person usually.
I am so touched and grateful, for this community - many, many thanks and yes, keeping sugar levels around 10 (baby steps) today and will reduce gradually.
I am so sorry to hear about the dialysis - always here if you need to talk.
Thank you again and all love to you all
Kate Xxx

Hey Kate - this is a brilliant place to 'unload' when you need to as you've just discovered so there's absolutely no need to apologise! We as a forum wouldn't even exist if people with diabetes didn't need support, would we?

Please don't feel mortified. I'm very sorry to hear about your situation, I really hope the counselling will help you.
