Hi I've just been told I Have pre diabetes my blood sugar levels were 43 back in April but no one told me.Just been told to cut out all sugar and reduce carbs.Very confused.

Welcome to the group, Specky....

As for the confusion you have come to the right place, even though we are confusing as hell you will generally get an answer or few

As for the carbs what I recommend is to cut or reduce all Bread, Rice, Pasta, Cereals & starchy vegetables like potatoes.... Instead replacing them with green leafy vegetables like Broccoli, sprouts, cauliflower and so on. Stay away from pre-made "diet" foods as they contain extra sugar to offset the lack of fat for taste.

Thanks Martin gonna have loads of questions so get ready .

Hi Specky. I too am prediabetic. Diagnosed with impaired glucose tolerance 5 years ago. I followed a low fat, low GI diet, switched to wholewheat carbs and kept them to a minimum. I bought a meter, tested what spiked my levels then got my bloods back into the normal range after losing weight/eating healthily. But...I have regained a lot of the weight following a couple of tough years and my latest hba1c was 6 - into the prediabetic range again. So, here I am, trying to regain control and delay what will otherwise become inevitable! This is a great site full of lovely, caring people with an immense amount of knowledge and support. Ask loads of questions, follow the link at the top of the newbies site and, if you can, get a meter and find out what you can tolerate - we are all different. Good luck to you and welcome! Katieb

Hello Speccy. Welcome, nice to see you here (or maybe not) :D They're very friendly and helpful here. I've learnt lots since being recently diagnosed.

Welcome.

Have a good look round the forum and decide on your approch to the news.
If you are able to stick to a rigid diet (many - inc me, cannot) then you could do so and wait for your next GP test.
For me, a cheap meter allows experimentation with different foods, keeps me interested and mostly on track.
The silliest thing for me was the 'excercise'. There was no need to sweat or pant - just half an hour a day of steady plodding was enough to reduce my insulin resistance to the point that I could enjoy a more varied (and interesting) diet.

Keep posting, this forum is a great resource and can only benefit from the extra input. So many people here react differently to similar foods, take very little as 'fact' (except the need to keep active).
