Hiya

I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago and just feel like want to chat to people in the same boat as feeling pretty poorly and a bit stressed about it I guess.

Have been referred to a diabetologist as not sure what type I have yet. So at the moment in limbo a bit in terms of managing it.

Mandy x

Welcome to the forum, Mandy1984. Have you been prescribed any medication or given any guidance about diet and exercise?
What else is important in your life?

Hi Mandy. Welcome to the forum. How did your diagnosis come about?

Hey,

Nothing at the moment. My doctor was a bit weird. I've not felt right for a couple of years and have been tested previously due to family history and repeated UTIs since 17!( I'm 32 now). Every time I've gone back in last couple of years I've been told I have stress, but genuinely wasn't stressed about anything. At the start of this year I got a UTI that never went, but all the tests came back negative for an infection, but positive for glucose. I had a blood test that read 14, and was due for another. Then had a couple of really dizzy spells and ended up having to call an ambulance with an elevated heart rate and my bloods came back again as 12 and a under active thyroid. He just said he'd refer me and said in the meantime to cut my carbs (which I am trying really hard to do, have given up sugar completely, bread, pasta and booze).

I used to be super active... Running, swimming, triathlons, trekking, but last couple of years the wind has been taken out of my sails. I am healthy weight and only 32 so all a bit frustrating because I can't lose weight to manage it.
Last month I've not felt well with it. Last week I pretty much slept Thursday 4pm- Saturday 10am and this evening I've had a funny turn again (can't work out if high or low blood is causing it )
Started seeing someone who is telling me get fresh air, get exercise and you'll be fine, but I don't he understands just how ill I feel with it right now and I don't want to put it on him or any of my friends X

Sorry for the blurb!

Once you and your medical team get the right treatment regime for you (medication, diet, exercise and weight management), you'll be back to running, swimming, trekking, triathlons etc. I do all those, although marshal, rather than compete, at triathlons.

At your age I'd be willing to bet it's Type 1 and I cannot understand why they didn't start you on insulin, frankly. The fact they haven't supplied a glucometer is ridiculous frankly. (It's probably actually something called LADA - which typically starts off looking like Type 2 and even responds to T2 medications, but later morphs into a Type 1 look alike and is completely treated with insulin exactly the same as T1 anyway)

I really can't think you'd feel so absolutely bleurgh constantly, with T2 even when you've had it a while, untreated - but of course I'm not a medic.

Whatever it is - I hope they VERY soon get their fingers out and get you started on a treatment that works.

I can't lose weight to manage it
Hi Mandy, it's not about the weight but diet..... Reducing carbs & learning which carbs spike your BG levels. I would suggest that you start testing your BG, many people buy the SD Codefree from amazon as the test strips are cheap.

Thanks Martin and Jenny.

I did feel a bit like 'now what...' when I left my appointment, but the letter has been sent to the diabetologist so hopefully should hear soon.

The doctor said he didn't think it was Type 2 or Type 1 and said it's not as straight forward as people think so maybe that's what he was referring to Jenny?

I ordered a blood glucose diet book and it was all about eating <800 calories a day and i am slim now so decided that wasn't the best idea. But do understand it's about diet, just finding that hard to get to grips with... I feel like Ive always got dizzy with little carbs so trying to work out when I feel ill if its too many or not enough. Ill have a look at getting an SD Codefree 🙂 thank you x

Welcome to the Forum Mandy1984. Is the book you bought Michael Moseley's by any chance? I have that one and use some of the recipes in it which are very nice.

I cannot do the diet though as he does not recommend it for those under BMI 21. There are also other exclusions too such as certain medications, post surgery etc.

At present I am in the "high risk" category and am trying to do something about this. I find people on here very kind and helpful and I have learned an awful lot.

When I first found out I was at "high risk" it was a real shock as I only discovered it through some medical research. They did not like the look of one of the blood tests they checked and alerted my GP.

I must have a look at the SD Codefree. I bought an AccuCheck but there are only 6 needles with it so would be changed quite regularly.
