Relationship to Diabetes

Hello everyone

First of all let me say how glad I am I have found this forum. Its been really hard for me to come to terms with being diabetic. On 21 May Ill be 50 years old, and thinking back, I am positive that I have been diabetic for almost two years prior to being diagnosed a month ago.

I moved to England in May 2010, with my husband and two daughters. My hubby is originally from England and decided he wanted to come back home. While we were living in South Africa, my sight started deteriorating, and eventually the ophthalmologist discovered that I had severe cataracts and was saying at that time that I was just too young to develop those type of cataracts. I had cataract removal and lens implant surgery, my sight improved drastically but the rest of me was still feeling ill everyday. My feet started going numbs and especially at night, it would burn like crazy.

Still the doctors fail to diagnose diabetes, saying its a blood flow problem and gave me water tablets 😡

Since being in England and receiving the most wonderful medical care, I feel a bit better, I am on Metformin and coping okay-ish. My feet are still a major bother and lately I have become very very emotional, crying often for no apparent reason. Everyone has always rely on me for most things, but lately I have no drive, no self esteem or want to do even the easiest of my housework.

Im extremely tired as well, and really try my best to move around, be active and use my treadmill everyday.

I think I have complained enough...just glad I am here to read everyone's stories which i am positive will be of great benefit to me.
🙂 thank you for listening

Hello Delucia and welcome to the forums.

Have you spoken to your Dr about your tiredness and wanting to cry. Ask for them to check your B12 levels. Metformin can reduce your levels and low levels of B12 can lead to a form of anaemia which could leave you feeling really tired. Low levels of B12 have also been linked to depression.

I am not a Dr but if you check your Patient Information Leaflet you will see the information on B12.

Everyone here has a moan from time to time so don't worry about that just rant away.

welcome to the forum......make yourself at home...........😉

Hi Delucia, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the delay in your diagnosis :( It always surprises me because it's hardly a difficult thing to diagnose and common enough for it to occur to most doctors, you would expect! I was diagnosed aged 49 too, so can relate to you there!

The problems you describe should ease as time goes on and your treatment begins to take effect. Often there is a transitional period where your body adjusts to the new, lower blood sugar levels, and during this time you can experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms such as yours. I remember my feet, particularly my toes, became very painful at night, and were often numb during the day. Hopefully, this will pass.

Have you been given a blood glucose meter so you can monitor your levels? It really is the best way to work out how different foods affect you, and what you can tolerate best - these things tend to be very individual as you will discover, so there are no hard and fast rules. I'd suggest looking through our Useful Links thread for some excellent reading matter, in particular Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker and Jennifer's Good Advice. There's also a link there to get a free meter from Abbott! 🙂

Please feel free to ask us any questions and we'll be happy to help!

Thank You

I have no word that would justify how grateful i am for your replies, it has given me hope and when i see my doctor again on the 17th, I will ask about the B12 levels...thank you so much. 🙂

Welcome to the forum Delucia. Its great being part of this forum when you have any worries just fire away and someone will come along and help with support and advice I couldn't of coped with the first few months after diagnosis without this forum🙂

Hello Delucia and welcome to the forums. Sorry to read about the problems you had getting diagnosed. You've had some good advice so far and I hope your appointment goes well. Sorry to mention your age (I'm 53 and was diagnosed at 46) but bear in mind that your emotional state may be due to the menapause. I often feel like you describe and am never quite sure which 'condition' to blame for it. Take care. XXXXX

Hello Dulicia and a warm welcome to the forum.

Welcome Dulicia!

Speak to your doctor about how you feel emotionally. I can relate to how you are feeling, I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and I now feel much better but still struggle as you say with simple housework and staying postitive about things, I often feel down and cry for now apparent reason too. I have little energy and no motivation to get up and get on with things. I'm really glad you posted - it is great to hear something that sounds so similar to how I feel and gives me hope too 🙂 I find it helps to plan fun things to do at regular intervals to give me something to look forward too. I hope you start to feel better soon xx
