Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all
New to this forum and new(ish) to diabetes. I was diagnosed with ‘gestational’ diabetes at 28 weeks pregnant, had good control using insulin - my BMI is around 19 and I am physically fit (a runner!). I was tested for autoantibodies after giving birth 15 weeks ago on account of my lack of GD risk factors and levels were high for 3 different antibodies, so this is now being treated as type 1 (that said I still haven’t had an official diagnosis yet). In the past week I’ve been prescribed a small amount of waking and bedtime insulin, which up until yesterday had been going ok (a couple of 11s after dinner, but daytime readings were within target, aside from a couple of hypos).
Yesterday after a stressful evening I had a random reading of 17.4 (this was 3 hours after a meal with medium carbs, same sort of meal I’ve been getting 9-11 readings with for the past week). It came down to 8 within a couple of hours (this was after my 2 units of bedtime insulin). However I’ve just had a pre lunch reading of 9.4. I always suspected my numbers were hugely impacted by stress in pregnancy - is it possible numbers can be impacted to this extent by stress? Last night’s reading has really thrown me off in a big way.

Welcome to the forum @HowDo1

Stress can release hormones raise blood glucose, and many members find their BG is impacted by stress, anxiety or excitement.

Hope you get some clarity on your diagnosis soon 🙂

@HowDo1 Misdiagnosis of GD is frustrating. I know at least two women with similar stories to yours - assumed to have GD but actually Type 1. Unlike you, they weren’t tested for antibodies so you’ve had really good treatment there.

Yes, stress can affect blood sugar - surprisingly so. Also, early after diagnosis your own pancreas is probably still making a tiny bit of insulin and that can be quite erratic, so some days you might go low due to that insulin, but other days it contributes little to none and you run high. The decline in your own insulin production can be really quite erratic so that might be contributing too.

The main thing is that it’s good you’ve now got the right diagnosis and that you’ve been given insulin. Welcome to the forum 🙂
