Junior doctors in England are escalating strike action next month to include a walkout of emergency care.

It will be the first time doctors have refused to provide cover in areas such as A&E and intensive care - the strikes so far have hit routine care.

The British Medical Association said it had been left with "no choice" in its fight against the government's plan to impose a new contract.

The all-out stoppages will take place from 08:00 to 17:00 on 26 and 27 April.

I spent an hour this evening on the BMA Website trying to find a place to offer my full support for them. Sadly they do not want the great unwashed frequenting their bandwidth so I left with my stethoscope between my legs. I hasten to add that I do not actually own a stethoscope.
I feel that Jeremy Hunt is trying to further his political career. I really feel that getting the doctors offside is probably the worst way in the world to do this. I as the rest of you suffer from a chronic condition. The NHS is far from perfect but even with all its faults it has been extremely benevolent to me. Our doctors are for the most part fantastic people whom most of us would go to hell in a handcart without.

Here here.

There are fundamental flaws in the government's arguments: firstly, it's not possible or sensible to stretch an already overstretched workforce any further - you need more resources, and that needs more investment and recruitment. Secondly, Hunt has argued, falsely, that more people die at weekends and this is what he aims to prevent - however, we already have 24/7 emergency care, what Hunt wants is 24/7 non-emergency care. People don't die from non-emergencies. For all its faults our NHS is the best healthcare system in the world and the government seems hell bent on destroying it - how can that possibly be in the country's best interests? It can't, so one can only conclude that it is in the interest of private corporations, many of which have MPs linked to them :(

MP's tied up with private enterprise?????? Perish the thought. When Mr. Hunt was running the Department Of Culture Media And Sport and he tried to steamroller though the full takeover of BSkyB by our favourite Australian toad just as the phone hacking scandal broke he proved that he had attempted to push the takeover through for reasons other than non personal gain. I believed him then and I believe him now because he said "honest, I didn't do it for reasons of personal gain, honest"

LOL, @Diabeticliberty

I am very sorry it has come to this but TBH I had a sneaky suspish all along that unless they DID escalate it - it wouldn't do much. A&E/Intensive Care is very emotive (though TBH - aren't SENIOR doctors more in evidence in ICUs? - but there again they'll be having to man A&E as well won't they? - so they'll then remember what it's actually like to be a so called Junior doctor, won't they? - in which case we might actually get some blooming action!!)

It's all a bit like periods, innit chaps? Where in that particular case, if blokes ever had periods, they'd have found a cure by now!

Is it VERY wrong of me to (kind of, sneakily, half-) hope Mr Hunt has a serious accident/ heart attack on that day?
