Junior doctors in England have suspended a series of five-day strikes over the next three months, following concerns over patient safety.

Walkouts in October, November and December, in protest against a new contract, had been planned.

The junior doctors' committee of the British Medical Association said that it remained in dispute with the government over the issue.

The government has said the doctors' case is without merit.

So it's without merit? How do they know? How can people with no idea what it's like working at the coalface of medical and surgical care say that the conditions they are imposing are workable and safe?

This is not over, by any means.

It sounds like the doctors have taken the higher ground. The government does not have a valid response. If they were more accountable for their actions, then perhaps the system might work a little better.

The government's stance and claims have already been widely discredited. The main problem is that this is not being as widely reported by our heavily biased media as the claims that the doctors are only in it for the money. :(

Doctors are always after money. I did a weekend on call in hospital once when the clocks went back. I put in a claim for the extra hour worked. They told me to **** off:( Heartless employers.

By the way, in those days the "admin" for the hospital occupied about three rooms on the top floor.
