Junior doctors are considering an indefinite walkout in protest at the new contract Jeremy Hunt is forcing on them if next week’s all-out strikes do not force him to reopen talks, leaked emails reveal.

Emails sent last week by the chair of the British Medical Association’s junior doctors committee (JDC) show that an open-ended withdrawal of labour is among the options it will consider to further its campaign. That could start on 8 June.

Dr Johann Malawana reportedly said in emails seen by the Health Service Journal that the committee’s executive may want to consider an indefinite walkout as a potential form of protest after the full walkouts on 26 and 27 April.

Malawana also set out other options, including a mass resignation of trainee medics; the possibility of junior doctors seeking alternative employment; recommending that trainees pursue careers outside medicine; and unspecified “alternative forms of permanent action”.

Mr. Hunt will no doubt have this spun to suggest that the doctors are letting us all down and putting greed and self interest against all our greater good. I also have little doubt that some of the media may even fall in behind him and fortify this stance. Having said that to date most of the papers have elected to forgo expressing strong opinion to keep on side with newspaper buying Joe Public who for the most part I feel support the doctors. Please bear in mind Mr. Hunt will not meet the doctors around the table to negotiate any further and flatly refuses to meet them . I suspect that this is because it might be construed as a sign of weakness rather than a sign of pragmatism. For my own part and most of the people that I know we all support the doctors whole heartedly and will continue to do so. The phrase that still rings in my ears was the phrase from a junior doctor on breakfast telly who screamed out in the strongest terms she could that she was diametrically opposed to the imposition of the contract because she felt it would significantly undermine the safety of her patients. I have zero medical experience but I hope that I am not stupid. I do for the most part listen to medical advice . Certainly when it is delivered with such clarity. I will say it again SIGNIFICANTLY UNDERMINE THE SAFETY OF PATIENTS.

The message does not appear to be getting through to him so I thought I might try it backwards to see if it has any more impact 😡 I doubt it though

LOL - why should he listen? He's no intention of changing his mind so what would be the point?

So - they'll just close the NHS and blame it on the doctors for striking - cos nothing whatever anywhere that ever happens to anyone is ever ever ever their fault - they are 100% fine telling us what we MUST do and what we must NOT do - but do not accept any responsibility when whatever it is doesn't work - clearly we didn't do it properly.

Have we all got this straight? After all these years persuading ourselves that Diabetes isn't OUR fault - suddenly - everything is.
