Medics' bids to work abroad leaped by more than 1,000% as they learned new contracts will be forced on junior doctors against their will.

There were 300 applications to leave the country on the day Jeremy Hunt announced the move - up from 24 granted per day last year and 14 per day since 2008.

Labour, the British Medical Association and Royal College of GPs had all warned medics would "vote with their feet" and abandon the NHS when contracts start being imposed in August.

Today BMA junior doctors' committee chairman Johann Malawana said the figures were "absolutely horrendous".

He added: "This government needs to stop putting politics before the future of the NHS."
