Just wondered if anyone has been through this rapid jump of fasting plasma glucose levels and having unintentional weight loss, and headache, occasional blurred vision, and Unexplained hunger and a *gammy* mouth...

Am going to ring gp in morning but just got a call with the 6.7 result...

Hello Pamela, and welcome. Was this a test done on a finger prick machine in the surgery? Because the machines only need to be within 15% tolerance, (10% at the lower end, I think) so it may not be the case that your blood glucose is rising. Having said that, they are on the high side for a non diabetic, and coupled with your other symptoms, it would be wise to run them past your GP. Are you thirsty and weeing a lot? That is one of the classic symptoms, as is unintentional weight loss, headache and blurred vision. You will be dehydrated if your body is excreting excess glucose that it can't use. Let us know how you get on, if you are joining the exclusive club of people with diabetes, there is a wealth of information and experience on this forum to help you through.

Hi Pamela, although higher this time, it's not that unusual to get a variation in fasting levels, and it's quite possible that the next one will be lower. Both those numbers are below the level at which diabetes would normally be diagnosed (which would be 7.0 or more, with accompanying symptoms).

However, your symptoms may be a cause for concern, so it's good that your surgery are on the ball and keeping a close eye on things. Do let us know how things go with the GP.

Hiya, thank you. It was a fasting glucose plasma test, and just waiting from call back from gp at the moment :/

I should think it would be pretty rare for anyone, diabetic or not, to have the same BG level 2 days running let alone a week apart.

I should think - if I had to take a guess - that the doc was wanting to check whether you're 'always' at that level - or whether the first time it just happened to be a bad day.

So now he knows this is your 'normal' level though not high enough to get the D diagnosis, if he's on the ball he'll probably want to give you dietary and lifestyle advice - ie take more exercise and - I hope!! - cut down on over-consumption of carbohydrates you consume (all carbs, including sugar) and (but only if you need to of course) lose weight.

Look forward to seeing what he does actually say.

Thanks, I am still waiting for call back will post outcome hopefully this morning

Hi an update - doc said to have blood tests repeated in 1 year... So spoke to nurse who said to get hold of diabetic specialist at my gp practice and if am still having ups and downs after dietary advice to go to a different gp. Am picking up glucose monitor kit tomorrow and am going to keep a diary as advised

Received a letter today "glucose monitoring test booked on 12th may, should not take longer than 1/2 hour". Didn't know of such a test anyone able to comment about what might happen. I I know I have to fast but that's all...

Hi Pamela, I'm not sure what they will do as there are a variety of possibilities. A fasting 'finger prick' test takes seconds and just entails taking a drop of blood from your finger. There is a more involved test called an 'Oral Glucose Tolerance Test' (OGTT), but that normally takes much longer than half an hour as far as I am aware - it involves taking a blood sugar reading, then you drink a measured amount of a glucose drink and then have more finger prick tests over the next couple of hours to see how your body copes with it. The other possible test is an HbA1c test, which involves taking blood from your arm (usually), which is then processed by a lab (or sometimes on the spot if they have the necessary equipment). Each type of test gives different information.
