Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
hello,, I am new to doing this thread thing but have decided to speak to fellow suffers on behalf of my sister, who has type 2. she is struggling with her diet, as she now has been told she has high potasium levels and i wondered if anyone can advise us how she should alter her diet. She loves veg but believes that a lot of it contains potasium and so must be avoided. What a dillema!
Ps a happy Christmas to all.

Hi Julie, welcome to the forum 🙂 We can't offer advice as we aren't medically-qualified, but some members may be able to share their own experiences of similar problems. Has your sister been diagnosed long, and has she seen a dietician about the potassium problem? Is she on any medication for her diabetes?

A Happy Christmas to you too! 🙂

Hi Julie and welcome. If you use google or an other search engine you will be able to find what foods are high in potassium.

Has your sister been given any advice on what to eat by her Dr. If not I would suggest she asks for a referral to see a dietician - who will be able to take all her nutritional and medical needs in to consideration.

Julie - welcome. The main advice I would give to your sister is to ask for referral to a dietician, as they're the professionals regarding diet and food. While referrals for "non complicated type 2 diabetes" are rare, where there is a confounding condition, such as high potassium levels, coeliac disease etc, GPs are more willing to refer, and should be nudged to do so! 🙂

I'd far rather trust a dietician than the internet! I've been fortunate to meet a few good dieticians, as a patient with diabetes and also as a researcher (nurse / marine biologist / health & environment / public health / child growth & development) in human nutrition.

Hi ju[ie i too had high potasium levels & got sheet with what was high levels, Tomatoes, spinach & bananas. Was shocked ! tomatoes 80% water Grow my own spinach & thought i was doing myself a good turn eating the odd pan of the stuff.
