Paul Sigston, 50, said his motive for becoming a “living donor” was purely altruistic.

He expressed his delight with a letter of heartfelt thanks from the recipient who said her first grandchild was born the same week as their operations.

Mr Sigston, a father of four from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, said: “I had wanted to do this for a while.

"I suppose I hit a sort of midlife crisis and thought I should stop thinking about it and get on with it.”

The consultant discussed his plans with his wife and four daughters, aged 20, 15, 13 and 10, who endorsed his decision.
