In this week’s cover story about dads who are inspired start businesses by their own childrens’ diseases, I focused on companies aimed at developing drugs. But for John Brooks III, co-founder of Insulet Corp., the phenomena extends beyond the biotech sector into the medical device industry.
Brooks is best-known as president and CEO of Joslin Diabetes Center. He's been in that job since March 2011, after serving on the nonprofit organization’s board for eight years beforehand. Before that, he co-founded Insulet, the Bedford maker of a tubeless insulin pump for type 1 diabetes. But when he first started teaching himself about diabetes nearly two decades ago, it was because his son Robert was diagnosed with it at the age of 3.
