https://www.joininuk.org/ Many local sports clubs, all over UK, are running special introductory sessions for people new to sports over the weekend 18th / 19th Aug 2012. The website is pretty user friendly to search by location and specific sports.

I will move this to Exercise / Sport section after a few days, but it's really for people who don't take part in regular sports or regularly attend sports training / competitions at local clubs, so will be seen by more people in General Messageboard.
 
Anyone try a local sports club? I couldn't as I was working at country park, looking after livestock (needed water top ups through day due to heat), directing lost looking visitors, giving out maps, dealing with waste in wrong bins, emptying bins etc. Still a very enjoyable day, despite having to empty dog poo bins, which isn't exactly fun on any day, but much smellier on a hot day.
