I have a blood sugar level of over 400. HELP
Hi Johnjo, from the number you have quoted I am guessing you are not from the UK? Either that or you are using a blood glucose meter that measures in mg/dl and not the normal mmol/l as used in the UK. If so then 400 converts to about 22 mmol/l. Have you been diagnosed long? Are you on any medication for your diabetes? 22 mmol/l (400 mg/dl) is high, but not necessarily something to panic about, it would depend on the reasons for it.

I would suggest you get in touch with a healthcare professional to help you, as I'm afraid we can't give medical advice. They will know about your situation and can advise accordingly.

Hi Johnjo, welcome to the forum. I hope you can get answers from your medical team but in the meantime have a look around the forums and you’ll soon feel at home.

See a doctor if you haven't already, the sooner you do the better .
I have now been diagnosed for 3 weeks (with a starting point of 21.7 which was close to your readings). now I am receiving treatment & eating a better diet i feel better than I have done for some time 🙂.

Don't let the condition scare you. apart from making me pay more attention to my diet & eat healthier (& Tastier!) meals it has had no detrimental effect on my lifestyle

I had 22 when diagnosed and was working (Docs after work ) and felt ok, bit tired but hey, get up at 5am a healthy bloke would be! Had a check up after Flu and they tested blood, rest is history.
Johnjo, Docs will sort you out and this forum will give you edumacation 🙂

Many thanks for the replies. Seems I have a european test gadget 400/18 = 22.2. it’s far to high whatever way you read it.
So, this is the 2nd day of the rest of my life. say bye bye to chocolate, cake, biscuits, fruit juices, beer and lots more.
I am a 64 years old, 6ft, 14st retired fireman who has let himself go for the last 5 years, I’m no longer that young ,body beautiful’ athlete I once was.
My doctor has told me to lose 10% of my body weight and do a least some exercise every day. He does not want to start me on any medication as yet.
I could do with any advice I can get.

You are right about what to avoid, except the chocolate - if it is the high coco dark stuff - which can be a bit of a shock, but if used in, for instance 'fat bombs' or other mixed up stuff can be rather nice.
It also means that rice, potatoes and bread, anything containing grain or lots of starch as well as the sugary things are off the menu or very much reduced. The good news is that some people manage to get down to normal levels in 6 months and have no further bother from diabetes symptoms as long as they continue to follow the diet. Some lucky people can even add back a few higher carb foods as their metabolism is improved. Weightloss seems far easier on low carb diets, and I only realised that I'd lost over 40lb when I found my record of weighings from the previous year - I was diagnosed over a year ago now and feel far younger than I did back then. I also have had to buy a whole new wardrobe.

I was put on meds after getting a 22.....dang, my Doc never gave me a chance for diet n exercise...well they are working. Good luck in the new chapter of your life and heed the wiseness of these people on here 🙂

Keep testing with the meter you have so you can see the affect the diet changes are having.
& make sure you are seeing the doc regularly.
