"Health secretary attacks health service" is a interesting headline, but one that, in varying forms, is becoming more common. Jeremy Hunt is today lambasting GPs and others over dementia care. In recent weeks, he's also criticised standards of nursing care and doctors' working patterns. No prizes for guessing what he'll do when the Mid-Staffs inquiry reports.
This is striking and surprising because we've been used to health ministers acting as advocate and gladiatorial champion of the NHS, extolling its virtues and slaying its critics.
So what has changed? Does Mr Hunt just dislike the health service and relish the chance to slag it off? Not as far as I know, no. Instead, there is political calculation at work here.
