Ok so here's my question
Got bite by dog on wee finger small puncture wound BUT got infected and had to have it washed out under GA. Nothiing to eat for about 28 to 30 hours - before I went under my Blood Sugar was 3.9 oh and I am according to my GP Pre-diabetic. A week before this happened I had an HB1Ac test result 41 (in Feb 2017 it was 48) so it is coming down due to my low carb diet - thanks to this forum for that. When I came round about 9am I had brekkie of Rice Krispies and a slice of Brown bread (I know Cereals aren't good but there was no choice either that or porridge) then at 12pm I had lunch of home made veggie soup and round of white bread, beef casserole with garden peas in gravy and Sugar free Angel Delight - about an hour later I was shaking and my pulse was 122 (usually 60-65). My Blood Sugars had went up till 18.5 - Why?? I don't know was it because of infection/constant supply painkillers/food as I don't usually eat al that kind of stuff now - but phoned my GP this morn as Doc in hospital told me to but she said everybodies sugar levels go up post prandial and I will be ok - but going on 3 week hoiliday to france on Saturday and don't know what I would do if it happened agsin it would worry me that is the first time it has happened. plus I don't know if I should be attending a diabetic clininc. sorry for all the details but thought I should contact you as you do know what you are talking about and would appreciate any feedback. thanks in advance

Hi @Jennibambi, I moved this to its own thread so other members wouldn't overlook it, and may have had similar experiences and advice they can share with you 🙂

That is quite a large increase after your lunch, do you know what your levels were before you ate? It may not have been just the food, but possibly a reaction to the procedure/GA that induced a 'shock' and stress to the system - your increased pulse rate would seem to support this. This can result in higher levels as your liver is prompted to release extra glucose as a reaction to the stress hormones. I would suggest monitoring the situation, with tests on waking, before and 1-2 hours after eating. Hopefully, it will improve over the coming days, but try not to worry or let it affect your enjoyment of your holiday - a short period of fluctuating levels is not likely to be harmful 🙂

Hi. It can take a few days for our BG to settle down after infections/GA, hospital food and stress doesn't help either. So you should start to see your BG improving soon.
Sipping away at extra water may help flush some glucose out of your system.
I hope your finge is healing well now.
I agree with @Northerner, try not to let this affect the enjoyment if your holiday.

thanks so much for such a quick response feel the people on here know more about this than the docs did. thanks yes I am taking first thing this morn 6.2 then 2 hours after brekkie 6.0 so defo coming down - if this should happen on hols then start drinking more water (hopefully is settling now and wont happen but just asking the question as it was a bit scary at the time)

Glad to hear things are improving, hope the good readings continue and you can put it to the back of your mind for your holiday - bonnes vacances! 🙂

I would have thought the answer is two fold really the GA would have caused stress then............
Cereal killers and bread that's a big hit on blood sugars
Soup is known to be dreadful for many blood sugar wise plus the bread you could be talking 30 or 40 carbs depending what they stuck in the soup.
What was in the casserole is anyone's guess the angel delight was about 15 carbs per portion.

So as you are a low carber then you have just over done the carbs hence your high blood sugars.
I'm sure things will settle down again so you can enjoy your holiday.
